I rescued the perfect 2 1/2 year old Beagle-Mix from a shelter. The dog I rescued is a quiet dog. She is generally a quiet dog except when she sees or hears something close to the house. She will bark but once you investigate it she will be quiet. My beagle is a whiner, she will quietly whine when she wants something. A month after I adopted her, I had a reunion party at my house. She was the perfect dog. She greeted everyone and then went about her business. Beagles are very Curious, that is why they must always be on a leash when outside of your yard. One word of caution... No two dogs are alike, each one will have their own personality. Here is what I suggest: First don't worry too much about the breed. Sit down and make a list of what you are looking for: - Temperament (quiet, excited, aggressive, playful, etc.) - Type/breed of dog - Size of dog (small, medium, large) - Maintenance level (long hair means lots of brushing, short hair little maintenance) - Age - Do you want an older (1-2 year old) dog that is house trained. etc.... Go to the site PETFINDER.COM and put in the specifics. They will show you the shelters and dogs in the area. Choose a shelter and go there with all of your other pets. A good shelter will sit down with you and try to match your needs and wishes to their dogs. They want to find the best home for their dogs. The dog's personality counts more than the breed. You want to make sure that the dog can get along with you. You can also work with the shelter to answer all of your other questions. I did this 1 1/2 years ago when I was looking for a dog. I was basically looking for a short haired, medium sized dog (like a beagle or basset hound) that was quiet and about 1-2 years old and house trained. I would up adopting the perfect dog... a 2 1/2year old Beagle-Mix. I've been extremely happy with her ever since. She was a bit larger than I wanted, but I wouldn't trade her for anything in the world.

I don't think it's so much the being alone, I think he may be bored. Beagle's are big barking dogs to begin with. Do you do enough activities with him so when he is alone in the yard he's all tired out? Even though he has a yard to run and play in, he still needs to be walked and played with. His brain needs mental stimulation...not just barking at people, dogs, whatever it is he barks at all day. When you can't be with him inside why don't you try crating him instead of leaving him outside where he may be annoying the neighbors??

I'm sure he's bored. My dog barks when he's bored. Get him a lot of stuff to chew and play with. Invest in a bark collar. I have one for my dog. He originally wore it for a week, and now just wears it when he forgets his manners or the neighbors get a new dog. Do you have a dog park in your area? You can take him there to play, or just wear him out by taking him for a long walk. Also, parvo only lives in the soil for up to a year. If it's been longer than that, perhaps a friend can bring their dog by to play.

First off, just let him bark for a few minutes, he'll eventully calm down but if he doesn't leave him in the house when you're gone. Try leaving your radio on, that'll probably calm him down.
If not ask a vet or dog trainer on how to help solve this problem.
Hopfully you can figure out how to make your dog stop barking.

1) Make sure he is getting a lot of walking and exercise (not just in the yard) during the day -- the more tired he is, the less likely he will bark
2) spend some time with him outside or during a time when he is likely to bark and let him know that is not an appropriate behavior
3) make sure he has interesting chew toys/activities in the yard
4) Watch the Dog Whisperer on Natl Geographic (or order the CDs)...FABULOUS

Beagles are pack animals. They love being with other dogs or people. There is no way to get around this. Beagles bark and bay...thats just how beagles are. If you can't handle it, then there's not much you can do. Thats just a beagle's nature.

He is a hunting breed. He is bored and is not getting enough stimulation and exercise!!!!!!!! They were not bred to just sit around!!! If they do, there is trouble in either barking or digging!!!
Get an exercise program going and get some good mentally challenging toys!!

basically the beagle is imprinted on you as his pack
when you are not there he gets anxious
you need to slowly desensitise him
put him outside alone for 1 min then go and play with him and reassure him
then try 2 mins and so on ...
it will take quite a lot of time but eventaully he will feel safe there on his own
