When the media started reporting that they wanted to make being in the country illegally a felony. And then it really got hot after the demonstrations.Yes.It's smoke and mirrors and a distraction from other issues.

Agreed.....Both Points
There Was Tension Brewing Before That
But Many Citizens(Through COMPLACENCY)
Were Not Really Aware Of The Issue(s)
Surrounding This National Crisis
I Think, For The Majority Of The Citizenry
That Day Awoke Many
And The Nation Of Taxpayers
Are REALLY Starting To Sit Up
And Take Notice
And They In Turn Started Waking More
You Said It Yourself
"the sight of that makes my teeth cringe

There Are 300 Million American Citizens

The fact is this is NOT smoke and mirrors, it is an issue government did not see a need to address because it is a federal law but the pain is at the local level in schools and health care. It came up when agriculture and other big business wanted to INCREASE immigration to an already failing system, while most taxpayers wanted to reduce it. That resulted in polarized House and Senate Bills, one giving nothing but border security, and the other increasing immigration of poor who take subsidized education and services to an unacceptable level.
Some politicians THINK they are using this issue, but I think they really have a tiger by the tail and that most of them still don't understand the concerns of their constituents. Even ex-governor Lamm in Colorado, when he learned this was considered the number one issue facing the country in Colorado said that 'he might have been too good' at getting people to focus on the issue, that they had gone from not giving it enough weight to giving it too much.
Look at the education quality of the schools in LAUSD, and the state of health care in our border states, for stark examples. This is not political gamesmanship or racism or mean spiritedness. It is literally desperation by American voters at the end of their rope.

It exploded on May 1 when the illegals and their friends took to our streets with their Mexican flags. This isn't to get our minds off Iraq. What is happening is that we are being divided and weakened by these two massive situations.

When Hospitals started closing because of mass of people using it. When schools continually yelled about overcrowding-because of the mass using them. When State's started to borrow from others. The list goes on and on--no control cost a lot of money and caused many problems.

Would you like to pay out of your pocket to care for these people. You do in taxes.
Let some move in with you and you pay the whole bill. Then I won't have to.
