the thing about the Jetta is that if it breaks down of if a part breaks then it'd be hard to get parts in considering it's a foreign vehicle

I would consider something like a late 1990's Civic or Corolla, get some driving experience under your belt, and then go for the new car.

The Caliber is a brand new model that has gotten lukewarm reviews.
Who told you foreign parts are hard to get? Not true at all.

If you must have a new car now and gas mileage is important to you, I would look foreign (Scion xA, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra).
If you have to buy American, the Ford Focus is your best option in that class.

The odds are great that this first car will become a total loss within 18 months or less. A VW Jetta is a better choice, 2000 and up. The are safe, reliable, stylish, kids like the blue dash lights, get good fuel mileage. My girl was hit in hers (not at fault), total loss but no injuries to her. GLS is a good choice, they have a hi safety rating as well. I replaced the total loss Jetta with a yr newer Jetta.

A teenager must drive a 5 to 10 years old car as a first car, not matter how much money he or she had. Parent stop buying the dead, to their kids. The Caliber is in the first year, expect surprises
