Like everything else, HD can be done well and it can be done poorly. Even poor HDTV looks a lot better than regular TV, but good HDTV is spectacular. Example of high quality HD programs include CSI: Miami, Lost, Desperate Housewives, almost anything on Discovery HD, some sports (recently the Super Bowl is excellent) among others. Sitcoms are usually (but not always) not as good. CBS and ABC tend to do the best overall, NBC is ok, with the exception of Jay Leno, which is a standard for an excellent HD picture. Fox is the weakest, but Amercan Idol is pretty good. Good HDTV looks better than a movie shown in the run-of-the-mill multiplex. Sharp, bright colors, good sound.

High def TV stands for High Definition television. HDTV refers to the highest resolution format of the 18 total DTV(digital television) formats. with twice the vertical and horizontal picture resolution, the picture of HDTV is approximately twice as sharp as that of NTSC. HDTV has wide screen aspect ratio of 16:9 and a Dolby digital sound system. currently used HDTV formats-1080i and 720p both offer reduced motion artifacts like ghosting and dot crawl.

1080i means that the resolution of picture is 1920 vertical pixels by 1080 horizontal and i stands for interface scanning. interface scanning is based on the principle that the screen shows every odd line at one scan of the screen and then all the even lines in a second.

720p means that the resolution of the picture is 1280 vertical by 720 horizontal pixels and p stands for progressive scanning. progressive scanning offers a smooth picture as 720 horizontal lines are scanned progressively or in succession in a vertical frame that is repeated 30 times a second.

other kinds are EDTV(Enhanced Digital Television) and Standard Analogue Television. EDTV has a Superior picture quality to that of standard analogue TV but not as good as HDTV.
