I think if the people who run puppy mills that are dirty, unsanitary, dangerous and inhumane were prosecuted, maybe things would change. Some people breed with very good intentions, they just do not know enough about the business of breeding to do a good job. They did a news story here about a year ago( upstate NY) that followed a golden retriever from the pet store backwards, to see where he came from. He was "Reduced for quick sale" at the pet store cuz he was already almost 5 months old, still kept in a tiny cage, unsocialized, living in his own waste- They found the disgusting puppy mill he had come from, downstate, with literally over 100 dogs- sick, damaged medtally, the mom dogs were continually getting pregnant and producing litters of inbred, unhealthy puppies. The people who visit the pet stores are probably not aware of the horrific conditions that these dogs come from. They feel sorry for the dog, buy it, and so the cycle continues. Well meaning people buy the dogs, and they often have problems. It really is a sad situation. First clue a dog "Reduced for quick sale" like a day old loaf of bread? That sucks.

The problem with boycotting puppy mills is that so many people feel bad for the puppies. So then, instead of not buying one, they buy the puppy, thinking how the puppy's life will be so much better. However, that just keeps the mills running. If people want them to stop, everyone needs to think about the whole picture, not just the one puppy in front of them. I'm not being cruel, I feel bad for these puppies too. However, if you help that puppy, you allow more puppies like that one to be bred again.

Live in Missouri and unfortunately one of the biggest puppy mill areas in the U.S. Own a pet shop but do not sell dogs or cats. There are so many animals available for adoption. Besides puppy mills, there are individuals who breed dogs and sell to the public for $50 an animal. These animals fare just as bad as puppy mill animals because the owners are poor and can not afford to feed and maintain the animals properly. When the pups are not immunized with the basic shots, many die young. You and anyone who reads this can pass around this information. Please spay or neuter pet dogs and cats. They get reproductive cancers/sarcomas in latter life when this is not done. It is way cheaper to spay/neuter than to raise unwanted litters of puppies. Many vets and Humane societies will work out plans with customers. Pets Mart has a wonderful program for placing dogs. Have seen many happy customers with dogs from there. Always get pet microchipped so if it gets lost, you can be notified. A dog or cat is a lifetime committment, not something a person gets on impulse for a child for Christmas or Easter or a Birthday. Dogs shouldn't roam free and must be immunized. If pet dog is tied to a tree/ doghouse or stays outside with no attention, don't get a dog. If you want a purebred dog, go to petfinder.com or to any breed rescue group. Both places make sure that people meet certain criteria before getting a dog or cat. If you must buy a purebreed, go to a person who has only a pair with one litter of puppies in the home. If person is not willing to show the parents and where the puppies are living, then by all means, don't get a purebreed from them. People who only have a pair and raise pups occasionally or are only going to have one litter will be potty training and socializing the puppies and will have them immunized with the first shots. If you buy a pup, don't pay cash, always use check or credit card and if the dog is going to be spayed/neutered having papers is useless unless for obedience training. This is the same advice we give customers coming to our shop. Beware of people selling animals on the internet also. Honest people will show off the parents and how pups have been cared for. House trained puppies are so much easier to housebreak and don't end up in pounds as much. Just to give you an idea how much puppy brokers make, the breeder makes $100, the broker another $100-$200 and then the pet shop doubles the price from there. I am aware of puppies raised here in my area that are sold in Florida's big cities for $1,000 and the breeder got $100. Medical problems show up when the dogs are 1-2 years old, especially in Yorkshire Terriers. Now pass this information to all your friends and Thank You so much. There is something you can all do to stop a puppymill. The USDA(the US Dept. of Agriculture) has strict regulations. Pet stores and kennels all over the US must show this license to the public. If they go to a kennel unannounced and find illegal and unsanitary conditions, this is what helps to shut them down.

I want to and I want to rescue dogs too. BTW I'm a Labrador fan myself and plan on having one of my own hopefully by winter. We can shut puppy mills down by not buying dogs at pet shops. However you also have the dog dealers that buy for animal testing which compounds the problem. I don't like having to add laws to our system but I think that we need to crack down on back yard breeders and puppy mills and shut them down. No licensing, none of it, just shut them down. Give the dogs good homes and start a free spay/neuter in every city in the country. The only people who should be allowed to sell dogs are people who show. Probably crazy talk I know but that I believe that would solve a lot of problems. It would cut out a large part of the 10,000,000,000 dogs killed each and every year.

Pet Store Puppy

I'm a little puppy, so cuddly, sweet and small
I live inside a cage, you see at Pet Store in the mall.
I'm not an only puppy, my sisters are all here.
My brothers, too, except for Ralph who died coz he was scared.
It's lonely here at nighttime when all the lights go dark,
We tremble in our cages and we whimper and we bark.
But no one comes to hold us or pet our fears away
We sit all night in terror til the store opens next day.
We don't remember mama left so far behind
She did the best she could for us til Man said "It is time."
He crammed us all in cages too small for us you see
We rode for hours; we could not help but lay in poop and pee
And now we sit in Pet Store where kids come taunt and squeeze
They do not hear our whimpers or understand our pleas
We're miserable and it's scary here we all would rather die
But since we don't we do our best to run away and hide
I know you think my story too sad to leave me be,
You want to take me home with you, a happy little puppy.
But please, though it is fearful to live here against our will
If you take me that leaves a spot another pup will fill.
You can stop our suffering but not by taking us home
You must be strong and leave us here, unsold and all alone
For if you do not take me, then another pup won't come
And maybe he will not be shipped so far away from home
Tho some of us may not survive the cycle 'ere it falls
If we don't sell they will not need more puppies in these halls
And if they need no puppies then the Man will not bring more
Eventually it can all stop!
You CAN close the door.
So when you see a puppy face so sad and sweet and small
In a cage at Pet Store at your neighborhood shopping mall
The best thing you can do for him is leave him sitting there
That is the best way you can tell all dogs
how much you care.

Well, I do not like puppy mills at all, but it turns out my pride and joy (a 8 year old pug XD) is from a puppy mill she does suffer from numerous health problems such as hip problems, early hearing lost, being born with her tounge to big for her mouth. But all those quirks make her my baby. But if you stop puppy mills you may stop someone from having a best friend.

Everyone wants to stop them but no one seems to know how. People need to boycott pet stores that sell puppies. Until we can shut the pet stores down, the puppy mills will keep turning out the pups.

I certainly do. I have rescued every dog/cat that I've ever had. I am pro-adoption. Stay away from the pet stores and suspected puppy mills. If the mills aren't making money, they'll go away.

Of course they should be stopped! Here's what you do... You go out, find them, and report them!
