Go into your options on your scanner, but I would not turn it off If I were you.

Why would you want to with all those wackos out there who get their jollies crashing or invading other people's computers?

Anyway, I have Norton Antivirus. I let the Norton Internet Security expire because I think with WindowsXP's firewall and up-to-date virus protection, along with my common sense, I'm about as safe as I can be. Anyway, when I open Norton, my Auto Protect is "enabled" but I have to click on Liveupdate for it to go into action. Are you talking about Auto Protect which should seek out new viruses and protect you constantly? Surely you want this on.

Double click the Norton Internet Security icon. When it opens, on the left, click Norton Antivirus. On the bottom row, you will able to see Automative LiveUpdate. You can disable it.
