Once you get situated on the plane you can take a mild sleep aid such as Simply Sleep (same thing as Tylenol PM, but without the Tylenol) or Benedryl. The ingredient in Benedryl that makes you drowsy is what is commonly used in over the counter sleep aids. Don't sleep the day before your flight so you're drowsy and ready to fall asleep once you get underway.

You can also try chamomile tea to help calm your nerves and make you feel sleepy. Many people find lavender to have calming and sleep inducing aroma. Some travel pillows have lavender in them, or you can by a lavender spray to use on your clothes (just don't spray it on the plane, some people like me are allergic to lavender).

Please do not take alcohol. It may drive you crazy. You need to know about planes and no-one here is much help. The cabin pressure in modern jets at cruising level is the same as about 9000 feet above sea-level. So you are in a low pressure environment, where alcohol has double or treble the effect it would have at ground level.

Do not take pills. They make you stupid and the after effects can last for days.

If you are on a 12 hour flight you may be changing a lot of time zones. Find out what the time difference is at destination. Set you watch to that time about three days before you are due to leave.

Try to adjust your routine activities to that time. You may also be lucky to be getting on the plane at destination-bedtime?

If you are lucky and it is early morning when you arrive you will be rested and ready for anything!

Get a neck pillow, really helps, get some ear plugs or listen to relaxing music... Or even record a lullaby and bring an mp3 player on board!

Read a book or magazine. For me I get tired and fall asleep. The other is to be comfortable in your seat. You sleep longer.

This is my trick. Probably you need to find what bores you fast!
