Have we become a nation of individualists that do not care as a society about others but only each of us about ourselves? Katrina seems to indicate that our society/government does not actually care because there have been no consequences, politically or otherwise to the persons that were in charge then and have not done anything about the preoblem or to prevent a re-occurance. YET, there is no outrage. no big protests. We seem as a society to care if a president has illicit sex, but not if our selfish lazy incompetent government neglects thousands of our citizens or kills thousands of non-americans for any reason. What happened to the dream?
How can we claim to be better than other nations when we are like this?
Are we falling into moral decay and doomed to expire like ancient Rome?
Any ideas how to change before we are ruined beyond redemption?

I doubt they ever did care too much ...nothings really changed .....all that has stopped is the veneer of sophistication that promoted caring and sharing ideals.

As the people get dumber there is no need to keep up the pretence. ...very sad but true!

I think the people who think it is fashionable and responsible to think about others are called LIBERALS. And I think that if they step up and do something for others they will get bashed by Neocons.

The reason why humanitarian aid fell apart during Hurricane Katrina is because a Republican President set out to do what conservative Republicans are horrible at doing. Being kind.

George Bush didn't even have the presence of mind to call any. Bill Clinton stepped up to the plate and went down there and pitched in and raised all sorts of money.

Kindness and civic responsibility isn't out of style. The problem is that voters go in to the voting booths and vote for big business and look at illicit sex and don't look at the people who can run social programs effectively.

I don't think its that Americans don't care ... I just think the Americans are sick of picking up the check for everything .. every day its something .. people are now buying beach property just so it can be destroyed by disasters like Katerina .. they collect two or three times what its worth .. they rebuild and next year they do the same thing again... the liberal government has ruined our country with all their give away programs the working man can't win...

Most Americans today claim they are too busy to care about others!

What is needed today is to go back to Christian ideals. Praying for our government and our neighbors, reading the Bible and living by its standards, going to Church on Sundays and not ignoring each other during the week, these and ideals like them will bring our country to redemption!
