I believe that there is. I think people that lack faith should live by this motto:
Live like there is a hell, that way, if you're wrong, you've lived a good life.
If you live like there is no Hell, you had better hope that you were right!!!!!
Here is how the Catholic Church defines hell:

The state of self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed, reserved for those who refuse by their own free choice to believe and be converted from sin, even to the end of their lives.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition

The pain that is associated with hell, I believe, is the torture that you feel when you are separated from God. You know, that gut wrenching agony that you experience when you know that you have done something terrible and you can't see any way out? I envision Hell is that feeling forever. No thanks!

"What is Hell?" was my first question in earnest about Bible teachings. I was Very grateful to learn what it Really is, and you can find out what I discovered in the following Scriptural articles:

Is There Life After Death
~ Do You Have an Immortal Spirit?
http://www.watchtower.org/library/w/2001/7/15/article_01.htm

What Has Happened to Hellfire?
~~~ A Brief History of Hellfire
~ What Really Is Hell?
The Hereafter--Where Will It Be?
~ Earth--Just a Testing Ground?
~ Eternal Happiness - In Heaven or on Earth?
It is so important to ask questions to make sure that what you believe is in harmony with the Scriptures from Jehovah God!
There's an on-line Bible on the same site, but I encourage you to compare it with others, so I'm listing a link to other Bibles under "Sources".
Many more subjects are covered on the site, & you're welcome to 'browse'!
Sincerely,
"Make Sure of All things; Hold Fast to what is Fine!" 1 Th 5:21
OK a boy came back to his village after a long search for knowledge on the existence of heaven or hell. He found his uncle who raised him from the time he was a child and who he loved dearly. He asked Uncle is there a Hell. The Uncle replied that's a stupid question. what kind of imbecile asks a stupid question like that. The Boy was enraged he felt the tears he felt the rage he could not believe his uncle could treat him this way he wanted to kill his uncle.
Then the uncle said the hate you feel right now is HELL>
He then took the boy in his arms gave him a great big hug and said this is heaven.
His question was answered
According to the Bible, there is absolutely NO such thing as a burning, fiery hell as a place of torment for the wicked. Such a teaching is a lie and not in harmony with the Scriptures. In actuality, the terms most often used as "hell" actually mean nothing but a grave, or pit. It basically refers to mankind's common grave, which is not some specific location. When Jesus died, it could be said that he was in "hell" for parts of 3 days, which is simply where all people go when they die.
Hell and Heaven exist both in this world. Sometimes they are separated by just an inch of wall, a piece of bread or a handful of coins.
Our hands and minds have the power to change a Hell into a Heaven, and vice-versa. It's all up to us, humans.
Of course there is a hell and everyone that does not repent of there sins is going there. Hell is a bottomless lake of fire. There is also a heaven and everyone that repents of there sins and accepts Christ as there savior will go there and live an eternal life with no pain or worries and walk down streets of gold with God. Read the holy bible and go to church and you will learn of heaven and hell.
No and to back up my theory that hell is only a state of mind, here's what Pope John Paul II said on the topic on July 21, 1999:
"Pope John Paul II pointed out that the essential characteristic of heaven, hell or purgatory is that they are states of being of a spirit (angel/demon) or human soul, rather than places, as commonly perceived and represented in human language. This language of place is, according to the Pope, inadequate to describe the realities involved, since it is tied to the temporal order in which this world and we exist. In this he is applying the philosophical categories used by the Church in her theology and saying what St. Thomas Aquinas said long before him.
"Incorporeal things are not in place after a manner known and familiar to us, in which way we say that bodies are properly in place; but they are in place after a manner befitting spiritual substances, a manner that cannot be fully manifest to us." [St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae, Supplement, Q69, a1, reply 1]"
There is only a Hell if you believe that a mortal can be so evil and deserves to go to Hell.
It is where there is a complete absence of good, and a complete absence of light. There are many mini-hells around us, where goodness is rare and where darkness is given full power. I've been in those places, and it is horrible. Hell in its fullest form is where goodness no longer tries to penetrate the hopelessness, and darkness. Instead all good and light is gone.
