That depends what is your personality preferance in a pet bird. In the united states it is estimated that there are over 400 species of birds available to the general public as pets.

Now hat kind of personality do you want?

quiet?
colorful?
talkative?
playful?
independant?
big?
small?
friendly?
active?
price?
space?
diet?

you have to condider these things.

If you want a quiet independant bird that will be fine with you working all day but happy to play witth you whan you come home, try a mustache or ringneck parakeet, they are colorful, quiet, long lived, and can learn to talk. They normally cost $200, and are aboput a foot long half of which is tail.

or do you want a loud attention grabber thats colorful and can talk great go for an amazon or macaw. they are huge amazons up to 15 inches mostly body. A macaw is the biggest of the parrots up to 4 feet from head to tail half of their bosy is tail, their wingspan can be up to 5 feet!!!! They need huge stainless steel cages for macaws that cost abou half as much as the bird itself. And they need thickeer heavier toys. Amazons are smallert and require slightly smaller cages. They are loud and eat a lot and are prone to obesity so feed a ean diet for them. Amazons cost between $400-$2,500 depending on the specie. Macaws cost between $500-$10,000 depending on the specie.

Or a cockatiel they are small they can be loud, they are affectionate, long lived and can even learn to talk. They are considered the best beginner bird.

Any bird can make agreat first bird it all depends on how much your willing to spend, and how much time you can spend with the bird.

Whatever bird you choose learn as much as you can and never stop learning you can never know too much.

Make sure your bird has a diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as bird sage human food. NEVER OFFER chocolate or avacado it will kill them.

Spend 2 hours a day holding and playing with your bird.

I hope this helps

Go to KFC and get a bucket of fried chicken, then you will have several birds in your house.

I don't like birds as pets overall, the small ones are pretty dumb, the big ones are smart but they live for a very long time so you have to plan around them being around for 20-30+ years, which sounds great, but only if they don't develop a bad attitude, the mid sized birds around here at least get released into the wild and there is a pretty healthy sized wild parrot population where I live.

All the birds I've seen are usually bad in some facet, I am much more a dog/cat person

If you want small, get a finch. Social? Cockatiel. Going for Exotic? How about a macaw? Colorful? Parakeets. Want peace and a relaxing coo? Get a dove. Singing type? Try a canary. Want a bird that likes to be handled? Get a lovebird. Impressing the guests? An African Grey (talks). Need a bird that's good with children? Get a budgie (budgerigar) parakeet.

Get 2 parakeets! They are very social and get lonely when they do not have somebody around all the time. If you get them both at the same time they should get along OK. Parakeets are not as expensive as other birds - which should make it a bit easier for you to get 2. Be sure to get a book and read all about the bird(s) that you choose so you will know what to get and how much care you will need to give them.

We'd need to know more than that to determine what type.

i.e.
How much time do you have to be with the bird?

How much time are you willing to spend with your bird?

Do you have kids?

Are you living with parents or other people that may have a say in this?

Do you have space for a very large cage or only a small one?

Are you looking for a bird that is childlike for a long time, or something similar to a songbird?

Do you want a quiet bird?

a cockatiel is cool. I had one. It watched TV with me on my shoulder and I taught him to say "Don't eat me!"

Go to Google first page, choose "more",,,then "videos"...then type in "Lyrebird" and listen to the video of him...AMAZING bird!!!
