You'll know not only in your heart but your head what you believe. Read the bible, read other religious texts, look for clues as to what you believe is the truth. Don't let people sway you, but look for what you truly believe.
There is no absolute truth, regardless what either the religious or non-religious think. You have to know in your heart what you believe.

I was not sure that I believed in God either for a long time and then Several years ago I had an unusual experience concerning an uncle, a distant relative who lived over a thousand miles away.
While driving my car I suddenly felt the unmistakable presence of this relative that I hardly even knew. He was more like someone I had heard about than someone I knew. It was very strange; it felt as though I was momentarily lifted right out of my physical body. I seemed to be suspended somehow beyond space and time, bathed in a love so intense It felt like I could have just disappear into it at any moment if It would have let me. It only lasted for a few seconds, but it seemed to last forever at the same time. I realize how crazy this must sound. The experience was so strong that at first I was afraid I was loosing my grip on reality. I finally managed to chalk it up to an over active imagination.
Three days later I got a call from my aunt telling me that this uncle we are talking about had gone into a coma and died the day I had the experience. It felt like ice water had been poured down my back when she told me this. I had lost any real ideas of God or faith and had become somewhat of an atheist. Needless to say this experience caused me to rethink some of the conclusions I had come to.
I feel blessed to now understand that even in our darkest confusion something loves us so much that it went out of its way to assist me and bring me back to a state of absolute certainty about Gods love for us.
During the experience it seemed like there was a vast amount of information that I was somehow allowed access to. One thing that I came away from this experience understanding beyond any shadow of a doubt was that any Idea that God is unhappy with us or would judge or allow us to be punished for any reason is simply impossible.
I can’t explain the love I felt with words. They simply don’t make words big enough or complete enough to do this. The only way I can begin to convey this love to you is to say that there was simply nothing else there. Nothing but love. No hint of judgment, no displeasure of any sort. It is as though God sees us as being as perfect as we were the day we were created. It is only in our confused idea of ourselves that we seem to have changed.
I hope this is of some help to you. Good luck. Love and blessings.
Your brother don

Keep searching for Him and I know you will find the truth. I also used to doubt God's existence, but somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew He was real. Read the bible(even if its just for 5 minutes) before you go to sleep at night, and I know this sounds funny, but try praying to God(perhaps just a simple saying, thanking God for giving you life and providing for you, ask it in Jesus' name). It might feel like you are just talking to air, but trust me, God will hear what is in your heart. The fact that you have a desire to know God is a good sign that you will believe.

Ask yourself:
Can I believe in irrational things which run completely counter to any factual evidence? Do I think that some omnipotent and/or omniscient deity is looking out for me and/or the world, despite what is staring me straight in the face?
If you answer yes to these and similar questions you DO believe in god.
You also might not want to if you think about said questions for very long, either.

My believes come strong when I think this way:
There is only one who created this universe, who created me with all the complicated mecahnism of life going inside me, my breath and life would stop once my small heart stops beating for a second. If he wishes he can stop it or he can leave until he decides. If he hadn't decided then I wouldn't have been born to my parents. He who alteres the day and night, who makes the rain pour from the clouds to wet this dry earth and grow the plants, tress and grasses on it., who makes the sun rise in the east and set in the west. Who gave me shelters under trees, who found this beautiful lakes, waterfalls, rivers for me to admire and enjoy. All the colors in my dressings, bags, utensils, cars ..etc is taken from this nature, the butterflies, flowers, sky, sun, trees,so many different colors which the human could not have invented it by himself.
I belive that this God doesn't have a partner and he doesn't need one. I can pray to him straight away. He doesn't need somenoe in the middle to carry our prayer to him. He is close to us when we are close to him, he sees and watches all our doings in the light or in the darkness. He answers our prayer without giving him food, money or anything. He just need our confirmation that he is the only God. He never asks us our money or children or anything. He forgives everything other than setting partners wtih him.
For this all I'm a muslim and I will stay muslim, because I don't have to bow to any king, richperson, whiteperson only to him do I bow and worship as he is full of kindness and mercy to me and all his creatures.

I agree with 1 + 1 = 11's response "Blind Faith" I sometimes feel the same way because I've yet to feel that closeness that some people speak of but I know I have faith. I think it is important to question your faith and believe in order to strengthen your spirituality :)

Sister, God knew you would ask this question and He wants you to know, He believes in you. He put you on this earth to love Him back. You ask yourself, " Is there really a God " and the reason you ask this may lead back to your ancestors... perhaps one of them wondered the same and it has moved on to your generation ( YOU ) ... the answer is yes... My name is Amber and I am a witness to the power in Jesus' name since he saved me from a demon i seen when i was a child. Believe it and be blessed.

The main advice I can give you is to look inside yourself. Forget all the holy books, religious fanatics, atheists, and whoever else is trying to influence you. Forget everything you think you know, and then look inside yourself. Do you see God? That's the only answer that means anything.

By faith you believe. You just believe in what you can't see or hear. Your heart will tell you. Your heart speaking will be God. If you feel a tug in you to belive, then that is God trying to get you to walk with him.
