..what's the deal with that? Anybody have any clues? From what I can tell his ears look fine but if he's not rubbing it on the floor he's scratching it.

Sounds like he could have an infection in his ear. You might want to call the vet....they can give you drops! (My dog always did then when she had an ear infection)

Check inside his ear...If you see dark brown reddish looking "dirt" but the ear doesnt really smell bad it is most likely ear mites, these can be treated by cleaning out the ear with cottonballs, and putting 2-3 drops of mineral oil, olive oil or Vitamin E in each ear twice a day for about 2 weeks making sure to clean the ear with cottonballs each time before putting the drops in.

If you smell his ear and notice a sour, yeasty smell it is most likely an ear infection and you should take him to a vet for treatment.

Check inside his ear to see if any hairs have fallen down inside and are tickling him, remove them and that will solve the problem.

Also if your dog was wet he may just be drying his ears out by rubbing them on the floor.

Or...sometimes my dog rubs the side of his head on the floor after I spray perfume or use strongly scented cleaning products...this is an attempt to wipe the scent particles away from the face. My dog also does this when I feed him foods with certain spices like poultry seasoning, or other strongly scented herbs.

Finally it could just be that there is a certain smell on the floor that he is trying to mark over with his scent, or trying to transfer the scent to his own coat

you can take a Q-tip and gently stick it in his ear to see if there is alot of wax or debris in there.

It may just need to be cleaned out or he might have an ear infection and there are drops you can buy over the counter at a pet store. Try cleaning his ears out first.

A dog's ear have alot of twist and turns but you just need to go straight down in the dog's ear and move the tip around and bring it back out. If the Qtip is loaded with stuff, then keep doing that as much as you can until it looks like it is getting better and not so much stuff on the Qtip.

If he stops rubbing his ear, then that was the problem. If he is still doing it, try the drops or simply take the dog to the vet and have it checked out.

By the way, my dog's vet, showed me how to clean out their ears with a Qtip and that is how we have done it with our dogs.

First of all, please do not put any object into his ears, let the vet do that. I'm of course not implying that you are. Here are a list of possibilities. If the ear looks nice and pink, then it isn't ear mites. A tick could be lodged in the ear, or a yeast infection or an ear infection. Best idea is to let the vet examine and please do not use over the counter medications.

Sounds like an ear infection-either yeast (malassezia otitis) or a bacteria otitis. You need to get your dog to the vet to get this treated-they will probably swab the ears to identify the cause, and send you home with topical and/or oral antibiotics or antifungal. While this is minor, ear infections can easily lead to serious problems. First, many dogs develop hematomas forom shaking their ears becuase of ear infections. Hematomas are subdermal build ups of blood that must be surgically repaired if developed. Also, Inner ear infections can develop from superficial infections and cause minor neurological problems. Therefore, see your vet soon to take care of this before it while its still a minor issue.

It could be a deep inner ear infection. Get him to the vet. This could be very, very painful for your dog. I've heard of dogs getting very aggressive with this type of problem, if the pain is so bad. Or, it could just be an itch. Give it a day or two, then call the vet. If it's already been a day or two, CALL the VET.

he probably has ear mites and infection. take a qtip and very gently move it around inside the ear DO NOT go way down in the ear unless you know what you are doing. if the qtip comes out blackish it is ear mites you will have to clean the ears daily and faithfully put meds in untill they are gone. it can take a while. infection can be yellow to lite brown color. he can also have yeast infection and it takes faithfull work to get them healed as the ears need air. long eared dogs like the working dogs get them more. golden retreivers , cockers and springers ect. get it all checked out. he may have to wear the cone if he keeps digging them

Take it to the vet. Their ear canal goes in and makes a 90 degree turn so if there is something deep in the ear canal you can't see it. It could have an infection or even just a build up of ear wax. But take it to the vet.
