Butanol would be an answer. It has 42% more energy per gallon than ethanol. It isn't corrosive, so it can be shipped in the same ways normal gasoline is, and runs in any engine that gasoline does. The best published process for making it, estimates that it would cost 8 cents less per gallon to make from corn than ethanol.
It will be a few years before this is actually produced for the purpose of fuels.
Any refined fuel can be made for aeroplanes and I don't think ships require special fuel.

Sure there is, it's called Bunker C and it's already in use in ships. But it it would tear up anything else that used it, as it's corrosive. If the demand on anything were placed on it, the price would still be high anyhow. The bad news is there isn't a fuel to solve the energy problems that we face. We need to conserve and seek a renewable resource in the meantime. Fuel cells are are promising, but can't fly a plane and neither can electricity just yet, too heavy. I've cut my driving to a fifth of what I used to drive, 9000 as opposed to 45000 a year.

Cheaper in what way? Oil took millions of years to transform from organic matter into Crude. The true cost of fuel is not being passed on to the consumer.
What happens when we use it all?
Will generations later discover that they could cure all evils if only they had oil?
They will be disturbed that their great grandfathers decided that they wanted to drive to Starbucks cheaply intead of think of the future.

there is this lady i read in the newspaper who switched her engine for maybe $1000 (or less, i forgot) and it runs on cooking oil. no kidding. not a tabloid either-- the daily newspaper.
she says chinese/japanese/korean restaurants are the best places to buy her fuel. if there isn't any there, she just goes to costco and buys the 2 gallons of olive oil...dunno how she got all this, but she did.
haha, she said that sometimes her car smells like japanese food when she runs it, :D

Some people use propane and natural gas. There is a new fuel that is made from nitrogen and another fuel that uses water, they separate the hydrogen from water and it is highly combustible

in some areas, diesel is more expensive than gasoline...
otherwise, consider finding a way to convert your vehicle to operate on propane...as of today, it is 27 cents a gallon cheaper where i live than regular unleaded...
