My mother and my husbands parents were not invited to my 200= guest wedding for just this reason.

My mother has since come to love my husband but at the time did not approve because he is Arab and Muslim.

His family still has not excepted.

But the part that matters we are more happy today together then the day we married

Back in the day before weddings were "official" and "legal", there were clauses written to invite the members of the waiting congregation to sufficiently 'add their two cents'. It was used to protect that santity of 'marriage' in the case where the female was not a 'virigin' and was trying to marry herself off to be one, or if the man was still 'common-lawed' married to another. Most weddings officiated today have excluded this portion of the vows as many couples write their own. Personally, I have never witnessed a marriage where someone spoke up 'against' the bride or groom marrying EXCEPT for the soaps/movies/. I "do" know of a wedding in which we were all waiting for the bride to come down the aisle - everyone was in place, and the crowd turned to look when the back door opened. Expecting the blushing and beautiful bride to come forth, her dad walked in alone. Went to the front, made the announcement that his daughter and her "husband-to-be" were rushed to the hospital where the bride was about to give birth to their first child. That was about 25 years ago. The couple did marry (at the hospital) and have 4 very beautiful daughters, five grandchildren and one great-grand I believe. lol

No--but I sure wanted to. After my friend was married for awhile, I told her that. She said that she wished that someone would have said it because she was ready to run out of the church. They later divorced. Sometimes it is best to follow your heart and not let the fear of hurt or embarrassment get in the way. If only people could be more honest in the times where honesty is important.

I did one time. it was at my high school sweetheart's wedding and I got up and spoke out. She started crying and said that she loved me and I told her that I loved her and asked her to marry me and she said yes she said she didn't love the guy but she was being pressured by her paretns to marry him because he was more of her "class". We have been engaged for about 7 months and will be getting married next year.

Yes...but they were quieted and escorted out of the building. So I wondered what was the point of asking if they didn't want the answer? I guess in some instances they pose it as a rhetorical question, figuring no one will be rude. lol

This expression date back to the time when women were considered collateral, just as livestock or land. What the question really means, does anyone here have any monetary hold on this woman.

We didn't have that phrase in our vows at all. My husband's elderly great-uncle Lloyd performed our marriage. We were just waiting for him to go off on a tangent during the service and start telling stories about us when we were kids. Fortunately he held off on the stories until the reception.

I had it happen at one of my weddings, This old guy always gets up and clears his throat at that exact moment and then says excuse me. I thought he was lying until he did it to me.

As far as it being for real, I've never seen it happen.
