It could be from a number of things such as boredom, habit, parasites, and/or skin allergies. Animals can have allergies just like humans. If it is parasites and/or skin allergies you can get medications from the vet. You can also give dogs human Benadryl one 25mg capsule a day. I have been raised around dogs and have been raising dogs for several years and I know from experience it is safe to use Benadryl for allergies. I would still get the vets opinion. Hope this has helped.

More than likely he has what vets refer to as a "hot spot". A spot of skin irritation that could be the result of an infection, allergies, or any number of things, he may have evn gotten into something that got on his skin and is irritating it. This is common on the legs and on the lower back by the tail. It's easy to treat, but he needs medicine for it. Most of the time a vet can diagnose it in a quick office visit. If he continues to lick and chew it could become an open wound that will become worse and be harder to treat.

If he is scratching or nawing on it, he could have fleas or what is commonly known as a hot spot.... there could be something he is allergic to outside. From my experience in this I have found just go ahead and take him to the vet and have him treated. It really is miserable for them... Bathing often and treating them regularly for this is the best way to keep it under control. He could also have a skin infection. So your best bet is a Vet.

Could be fleas, allergic reaction or just behavioral. Take him to the vet to rule out any of these things. If it is allergies a injection can help, if it is fleas your vet can get you a flea product

Boredom. leads to licking, leads to hotspot. Get some granulex from your vet to heal the wound, and get your dog something to do. A new trick to learn, a new dog friend, a new path to walk or game to play. Move his bed, talk to him. A combination of all these would work best, and if you can't do them all then pick a new job or a new friend. Boredom sucks, and we can tell someone we are bored, dogs cant verbalize so they internalize. But a trip to the vet to heal the hotspot should come first.

. your dog is beginning to chew. that is boredom. give him more attention and if left alone alot he will start on the other leg and make sores. fill up some small plastic pop bottles with dog kibbles or small treats . take the lid off. make sure kibbles are big enough to stay in the bottle. he will smell them and chew and play with this till he has really tore the bottle up.do not let hiom eat the plastic change the bottle. give him more excercise or walk him. when you are there with him do not give him the treat bottle . give him more love and attention and when gone he gets the bottle. he will stay to busy trying to get the food out .he wont think about biting chewing and licking his legs.

I have a Golden Retriever and she has done the same thing to her right front paw. I took her to the vet 2 times for it and got antibiotics but she keeps doing it then she bites it and gets it sore. It is too costly to keep taking her to the vet for it. What I do now is use Bag Balm and wrap it with a dressing and it works great.

I could be anythign, allergies, fleas, a hot spot, etc. You want to try to get him to the vet, but for now, keep it clean, with a mild soap, and if it looks infected at all you can apply triple antibiotic ointment to it. If it gets worse, I would suggest getting him into a ER vet. Well LUCK!
