Mine hates sitting in my lap. I'm pretty sure she likes me though, because she's learned quite a few English commands and follows happily. She does everything a loving cat does, but why doesn't she sit on my lap or lie on me?

Some kitties just aren't lap cats. Mine for example. Maggie hates being cuddled she whines and growls and wiggles to get away every time I try to cuddle her. Gixmo on the other hand is a sometimes cuddler. She cuddles with you when SHE feels like it not when I feel like it. And my sweet lil Mary Kate, shes a total lover but shes not much for sitting in your lap either, but she will curl up next to you and purr away. So it really depends on your kitty. Be happy your kitty listens to you, mine for the most part look at me like I'm retarded....

Often cats who won't sit in your lap are one of two things: a) claustrophobic (they fear being confined or trapped), or b) naturally temperamented to be that way, like Maine Coon Cats. Don't take it personally. For example. Maine Coon Cats love to sit next to you and follow you around, but almost always refuse to sit in your lap. That's just the type of cat they are - seems to be a trait of the breed. Many cats don't like to feel confined at all. Mine doesn't like to be picked up and never sits in my lap, but LOVES to be sitting right next to me and is very affectionate. He insists on following me around, too. He just doesn't like to be confined is all...but maybe he's part Maine Coon? Who knows? Cats are like people. They are funny sometimes and suffer from some of the same ailments (mental and physical) that we sometimes do.

Cats are very independant creatures, doing what they like when and how they like. Your cat probably does love you. You are a very important part of it's life and she will try to please you in ways she wants to. She probably will slip un onto your lap one of these days. When she does, don't try to grope her, just let her get used to it. She will learn to realize she likes that as well as you do.

They sit and ly on you for love and attention. Maybe your not giving enough attention to the cat for it to respond to the way you want it to.
