It means that what Jesus had predicted and told his disciples at the last supper came to pass. The shepherd was struck and the sheep were scattered.

Matthew 26:31-36 Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' 32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee." 33 Peter answered him, "Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away." 34 Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times." 35 Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!" And all the disciples said the same. 36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I go over there and pray."....But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples left him and fled. Matthew 26:56

This is an example for us about faith. Despite Christ telling the disciples He was indeed God and what would happen as far as Him returning, they yet lost faith and ran away. We should learn from this example yet many of us (myself included) fail to trust Him when we should be and rather either run away or rely on our own strength.

No, John, read the Bible. The fell asleep and did not stay awake while he was agonizing about His calling. He was fully human, so he wrestled with His passion and what He was sent to do. He was fully God as well and knew that this was the purpose of His coming and Scripture must be fulfilled and He must obey His father. They could not stay awake and watch with Him, the guards were on their way with Judas.

Because they all did except John. John charged John from the cross to take care of Mary, his mother. Judas betrayed Jesus, and Peter himself denied him three times, just as Jesus told him he would. The disciples, apostles, had lost their leader and were sore afraid for their lives. They were all murdered except John who died on the Isle of Patmos where he died.

What source are you citing that says they ran away from God? They fled from Jesus, who is the Son of God (Matthew 3:16, 17; 26:47-56).

it means what it says - when roman soldiers came to arrest (& cruficy) Jesus, his discples ran away or pretended that they do not know him, so that they do not get crucified as well.

This is in strict accordance to the prophecy (that Jesus will be the only innocent crucified on that day), and amde perfect sense since none of the disciples could rise from the dead like Jesus.

They freaked out, and did so for 1700 years, until William Blake came along and realized that Jesus was never resurrected into another body, but into the Body of Christ.

The desciples had moments of doubt and ran away to keep from being captured by the Romans and imprisoned. They hear Jesus tell them many times that He would be put the death and they weren't ready to die with him at that time.

Is this is the passage you are referring to?

Matthew 26
45Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

This was a time of crisis for Jesus. Read this paste below from:

Qoute.......

While Judas responded to the crisis of not being able to accomplish what he had hoped, Jesus steadfast and resolute went through His time of testing. His testing comprised of understanding what He would soon need to go through - the ordeal of the cross with all its suffering and shame.

The temptation in the end boils down to a choice just like for Judas. The incident that brought Jesus to such a intense wrestling was the simple knowledge of what He would soon face. This knowledge produced in Him an awareness that He actually had to be separated from His heavenly Father.

End qoute.......

During this time of crisis, Jesus wanted his disciples to pray for him to be able to endure what he knew was ahead of him, instead, they fell asleep. Jesus had asked them to pray I think three differnt times, of which each time they slept. Jesus chose to take his cruxifiction as Human, no divine intervention, as this is how it was propheciezed. He was looking for his friends to support him with prayer to the Father in his time of crisis.

Here is the chapter context relevant to this:

Matthew 26
36Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."
39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

40Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

42He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

43When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

47While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." 49Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.
50Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for."[d]

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

52"Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"

55At that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
