If you are retiring here, the most you can get is a tourist visa that you should renew every month. Unless, when you retire here you will also invest some money in China, then you can apply for the investors visa that is renewable on a yearly basis. After 4 years of renewals, you can then apply for permanent residency. By the way, the permanent residency rule does not apply for tourist visa holders. :)

As far as I know, it's virtually impossible to get a residents' visa unless you're working or studying (unlike in other countries such as Malaysia that have special programs for retirees). You could just do what I do, however, and get a one-year students' visa and renew it every year. If you can find a university that doesn't pay much attention, you won't even have to actually enroll and pay for the classes if you don't want to. I think it's the easiest and most convenient way to stay in China long-term.

Just live there and continue living there (it is a requirement to have a residency document to live in China anyway).

well one way is marry a chinese gurl who is resident over there , but remmember for family planning lol.
