The problem with messenger is NOT service pack 2. The servers are down.

Windows XP SP2 installed the Windows Firewall. It is possible that it is blocking your messenger communications.
Go to the Control Panel and in the Classic View open Windows Firewall. There you can add any application that you want to be able to communicate with Internet.
You may want to take a look at the following article in MS Knowledge Base:

Following query returns more articles:

NO, I have service pack 2, its just update your windows but it does not affect messenger, ppl are having problems today but it is yahoo company so they may have an overdrive on their system that cause them to malfunction so we'll know later on tonite or tmrw...Dont frown, smile until then.

Doesn't affect messenger - I still refuse to download service pack 2 on my desktop, I did that once and ...it totally killed my computer.

nope your not alone. I've had sp2 for about 6 months now. Thats not the problem. It must be a server issue.
