The Japanese people changed their constitution to only allow defensive military. It is not us preventing them, it is their own people to insure they never get imperialistic again.

The Japanese Self Defense Force is currently well able to defend their shores, as ordered by their current Constitution, adopted at the end of WW2 to quell any attemps by the military leadership at that time to retain their aggressive stance.
That being said, however, withthe current events going on in their back yard, it is very possible that an ammendment would be considered and enacted, allowing the JSDF to become a standing military capable of offensive tactics. The United States, while a friendly ally and heavily involved with Japan's SDF cannot forbid a soverign nation from doing so without serious repercussions. And with Japan's stanc eon so many American troops stationed there, it may very well be a trade off.. we leave Okinawa, and they get to lose the 'self defense' part of their name.

The Japanese military has already re-armed. They are technically called a Self Defense Force and tasked solely to defend Japan. However, recently the Japanese government, taking their cue from the Bush Administration's example of "Pre-emptive War," have said that they could attack North Korea in order to defend Japan from a possible attack.

The answer is probably soon due to the North Korea problem. The US cannot fight three wars at once if it had to fight Iran, Iraq, and North Korea. We would have to let the Japanese invade the North Korea because they have the manpower and location. It would take US land forces awhile to get through North Korea's minefield an other obstacles in the Southern part of that country. Meanwhile an amphibious landing by the Japanese would surprise Kim Jeung Il and help alleviate the need for US forces there,

The Japanese have already rearmed. They just call their military Self Defense Forces and they are prohibited from making war overseas. They have a large, powerful air force and navy and very modern ground forces. They could probably produce nuclear weapons in short order if they wanted to.

No// The U.S. has a treaty with Japan that will not allow them to have a military, They are allowed a force big enough to defend the island only..We defend Japan if it is attacked. That is why we have bases there.
