there are many reasons why your dog may no longer prefer to go "potty" outside - some of these include:

1. health reasons - is your dog feeling ok? perhaps a vet check is in order

2. what has the weather been like? perhaps it is quite hot where you live, or there may be other environmental factors

3. stress (again, many different stressors) may affect his desire to go outside.

4. once he's started, he may smell the places where he's gone before and prefer to be inside...

5. dominance issues - is there another animal recently brought into the house? how about a new family member or visitor?

there are many reasons why his behaviour may have changed. do some research - there are many great resources available online.

Definately schedule a vet visit. If he has something like a Urinary Tract Infection and it hurts when he pees, it may be that he has associated the outdoors with pain.

So, see the vet and in the meantime, treat him like a pup. Take him outside on the leash every hour or so, give him time to go potty, and when he does, make it the biggest most happy deal of his life.

While in the house, keep him where you can see him at all times. If that means putting him on a leash to keep him at your side, do it. This way you can stay sane and he won't get into trouble.

If nothing turns out to be wrong with him, you'll just have to spend that extra time reprogramming him. Good luck!

It is possible something happened that scared him outside when he was pottying and now a superstitious behavior formed.

Or he is having some arthritis and the stairs are difficult for him.

Or he is having a UTI or other health problem.

Dogs do not use pee as a weapon to piss off their humans. Pee is a good thing to dogs, so it couldn't occur to them to use it maliciously. Get your dog checked out by a vet ASAP.

What has changed in the household? New member to the family, change in food, change in pee pee area? Sometimes our pets experience stress in some way shape or form. Look at the pets recent (within the last 3 mo) and see what has changed. If you draw a blank time and u luv your family member see a vet asap.

I think for some reason he is afraid to go outside. He will get used to it but you have to be patient and take him outside after meals again just like before, and wait till he goes before going inside, and giving him a treat.
