Maybe it's one of the only things they can think of to talk to you about? I know lots of times I ask stupid questions to people I like just because it's the only thing that I can think of when I want to talk with them. x)
If they aren't trying to be nice and make conversation...then they are probably just genuinely nosey.
If they are a girl then maybe they like your ex and would like more information about how he works in a relationship. If they are a guy then maybe they want to know how YOU work in a relationship and if you did anything wrong that you would do again.
Just possibilities... :]

Some people like to talk / ask about things went wrong or things didn't work out for others just to feel good about themselves. So it lets them make up their minds thinking that bad stuff happens to others as well. Or maybe some are tryin to learn a lesson from your experiences.
Just ignore them. Don't let them get on your nerves.

Some people are always curious, and always wanting to mend things. My ex daughter in law, the one that filed for the divorce, still refuses to let go.. she adores the questions of others, she thrives on it.. she's into those self glorifying pity parties. My son, hates it when people keep asking him how's she doing, getting back together, etc..
You can't make people stop unfortunately.. Just keep telling them that you've moved on..

When people see a couple that truly look happy then all of a sudden it falls apart it is human nature to be curious. If you are comfortable talking about it tell them the truth and eventually they will quit asking. If it is still a touchy subject just tell them so or change the subject yourself

People have nothing better to do than to interfere in other peoples lives. Tell them the relationship didn't work and you have put it behind you. You no longer want to dwell on the past but work on the present and future. If they don't like it, it is their problem

Curiosity. If you were together for 2 years, they would want to know what happened to cut off a relationship that lasted that long.

People Usually Like to bug people, like they think that u didn't really let himi go, tho you did. What I say is try to change the subject. And who cares, as long as you don't ask about him!

They say it because they are simply looking for something to talk about with you. They know that you and him used to date, so they bring it up, assuming it will draw you into conversation because it's about you.
I had the same problem with people for a long time. :P
