Depends on the airline but usually 1 carry on and 1 personal item (laptop, purse, etc). They have to be in small bags though, so be careful

Check with your airline website. Delta lets you bring on a carry-on bag (small rolling suitcase) and one additional item per person. The carry-on usually goes over the seats in the compartments. The additional item has to be able to be stored under the seat in front of you. That could be a camera bag, a laptop computer, a purse or small bag or backpack, for example. They will also let you bring a shopping bag if you are coming back from a vacation.

2 checked in bags (weight limits differ depending on the airline); a carry- on, like a backpack or small suitcase; and a smaller carry-on such as a purse. You can bring more on but they will charge you extra. If you are traveling with others, you can divide the luggage between all of you so that no one will be charged the extra fees.

in these days of failing airlines, everything changes. each airline has its own rules. you need to check with the specific airline when you book your ticket. normally you can bring one carry-on bag (in addition to a purse or briefcase) on board, and check two bags without cost. i just returned home on a northwest flight and their weight limit per bag was 50 pounds ($25 extra for heavyweight bags).

Supposedly two, but some airlines aren't as strict and they'll let you bring a carryon suitcase, a computer bag and a purse.

If they all buy their own ticket, you can bring as many as you want.
How many Mothers-in-law do you have anyway?
