Firstly I would say visit your doctor so that a full assessment can be given whereby your doctor will diagnose you with depression or not (it could be something as simple as hormone deficiency, problematic thyroid and there a other illnesses that has symptoms very similiar to those of depression.
If it is depression then between you both, anti-depressants can be looked into but also therapy, as depression is often symptomatic of underlying issues that need to be resolved.
You may find it takes a while to find the correct medication and initially you will feel worse but stick with it as once the right one is found and the side-effect time period has passed (normally within 6 weeks) then you can get a better grip on life and really start to move forward.
I have been on Efexor for 12 months and initially was signed out of work for several months, I am now back on 40 hours but continue with therapy although not as frequently and although I would like to be off the medication I am not in any hurry as I don't want to go back to the place I was in.
My starting point was the doctor and she helped point me in the right direction to get well, and once I started to feel a little more in control I started with homeopathy, acupuncture and chinese herbal medicine which I find beneficial and hope to continue with once I am off the prescribed meds.
I wish you good luck in feeling better, whatever path you choose to follow.

I've had depression for years. I've been on zoloft for 3 years and I'm doing so much better. I still get depressed a bit sometimes, but I don't mind. I like that the zoloft isn't making me some freaky, unnaturally happy person.

I suffered for DECADES; I tried several different anti-depressants and had terrible side effects that made me more depressed.

My nurse practitioner suggested St. John's wort. It's worked miracles for me. Plus, it's cheap and available without a prescription. I haven't heard of anyone else that had such dramatic and fast results as I have, but most people I know who have tried it, swear by it.

I have depression and I don't cope with it well. I've self medicated and been on prescribed medicines. I'll read books to cope with it. I'll keep myself active and positive, at least I used to. but I try to keep myself calm and do what I've got to do in order to get better. Putting myself into hospitals, take medicine or mediating.
