Baby Kangaroo.
Baby Kangaroo is technically mine and not a kangaroo, but has been adopted and recategorized by my son (3 yrs old). Baby Kangaroo is really a stuffed chihuahua. Somehow over the last 1 1/2 -2 years, it became one of my son's favorite animals. He was discovered sitting on my dresser, minding his own chihuahua business. Suddenly he was yanked from his silent reverie and renamed "Baby Kangaroo." Since then my son randomly carries him around and tries to adopt him as his own. When I tell him that Baby Kangaroo is mine my son responds "we share him." I think that Baby Kangaroo is going to follow the magic orange blanket into the ever increasing realm of What Used to Be Mine.
My son goes through phases when he forgets about Baby Kangaroo and lets him rest unmolested atop my dresser. Now is not one of those phases. For the past week and a half my son has been playing with Baby Kangaroo almost everyday. At first my son would return him to my room or leave him in the living room for quiet time (naptime). Then came the fateful day when we lost Baby Kangaroo right before quiet time. My son was in tears and only consented to give up the search and go to bed when I promised to keep looking. We didn't find him until the next day hiding behind our church bags (yes, we have 2). My son and Baby Kangaroo are almost inseparable. Luckily he doesn't insist on taking him out of the house. Baby Kangaroo regularly shares a bed with my son and one night almost got his own bed in my son's astronaut hat (empty tupperware). My son and Baby Kangaroo talk to each other too. Each time he addresses Baby Kangaroo by name.
My son: Why are you sad, Baby Kangaroo?
Baby Kangaroo: I can't find my mommy.
My son: Don't worry, Baby Kangaroo. I'll help you find your mommy.
Baby Kangaroo: Oh, thank you so much.
My son: You're welcome, Baby Kangaroo. I love you.
Baby Kangaroo: I love you too.
Another conversation.
My son: Why are you sad, Baby Kangaroo?
Baby Kangaroo: I can't find my mommy.
My son: I'll be your mommy, Baby Kangaroo.
Baby Kangaroo: Oh, thank you so much.
My son: It's OK. I'll keep you safe, Baby Kangaroo.

My daughter is 2. She constantly wants to "be a baby." She wants to cuddle up in a baby blanket and has a play bottle and pacifier and "cries." It was cute at first but TOTALLY annoying 2 weeks into this phase. Two weeks ago she was super independent. Total reversal!
