I know Andy said he painted because "Chinese is in Fashion"? Are there any other reasons especially a political one? Also, he had shown a great deal of distaste in fascism.

I think to understand the "why" of what an artist paints, you have to look at their portfolio and draw your conclusion from that. In Warhol's case, his portraits were of people that were either popular on in some case "in the spotlight." Mao was big news back in the late sixties and early seventies. I think you are trying to imply that Mr. Warhol was somehow anti-American or at least Communist with your question. You need to remember that the sixties was a time of revolution . . . a revolution of attitudes and ideas.

Thank you too all the non artist, or art students for your text book answers. Andy Warhol was more then just an artist, he looked at life in a way that others missed. First it is important to understand that Warhol (one of the founders or POP Art) looked at what people were going to be looking at for the next 50 years. He wanted to show that Americans and the rest of the world was going to buy into this POP culture. And you know what he was right. But his work did more then that, Andy looked at how his work effected the human psyches. He wanted to push the people to look at his work and go why? Even when addressing issues about himself Warhol was never completely up front about anything. He said "If you want to know what my work is about just look at me." But people did not really know him so how were they to really know his work?

The 'Mao' works of Warhol are really paintings. Their silk screens.

As to why he would feature Mao in one of his silk screens is probably because he was a shrewd businessman and understood keeping his name before the public brought in attention and demand for his work.

Warhol liked to paint icons and iconic images, Monroe, Elvis, Jagger, Taylor, dollar bills, coke, soup....
The image of Mao is iconic to billions of people around the world. It was almost the obvious thing for him to paint.
