The rib cage consists of 12 ribs on each side which extends from the 12 thoracic vertebrae to the sternum. The top 7 ribs are considered as the true ribs since they attach to the sternum individually while the next 3 ribs (also called false ribs) are connected to each other and then to the lowest true rib by costal cartilage. The last 2 are the floating ribs and do not extend to the front of the body.
