stay away from the windows, stay off of the phone, don't take a bath ... if the alarm sounds for a tornado, go to the basement or a room with no windows for shelter.

Take a book that you can read to the children so that they aren't afraid. Make sure you know where a flashlight is in case the lights go out.

You also shouldn't be on the computer if it is thundering & lightning, so turn it off until the storm is over.

I'm sure the storm will pass quickly ...

First of all, stay inside the house, because that is where you most likely are the safest. Stay away from the telephones, and do not take any bath/shower during a thunderstorm...
If you are outside when it starts, go to the nearest building and try to wait until the storm is over. Do NOT stand near or under a tree. Lightening will strike the tallest object which usually are the trees. So it is important to be inside a building.

Since lightening produces electricity and that travels on water is it dangerous to be in or near a pool. The first thunder you hear should tell you to get out. Stay out of it and away from it until the weather is clear again. Electricity produced by lightening travels on the surface of water, so if it rains a lot and the rain accumulates to the point where you are standing in water then you are in danger too--so make sure you are inside a house(usually buildings have lightening rods), in a dry place, not in water or near lake/pool/pond, that you will not use the telephone while it is thundering and lightening, and that you won't use the shower/bath during that time. Also, try to disconnect all televisions and turn them off, if lightening strikes nearby or if it strikes the generator, your televisions can go bad.
If you take all the precautions you should not be scared.
If something would happen, call 911....

Take the children to a well lighted room in the house and start singing songs. You know, all the little kid songs. You can color with them. Maybe everyone can sit in a circle and you can read them a book. Another idea would be to sit in a dark room and watch the storm from your safe place. After all, it's just a little louder than the fireworks from the 4th of July except there's also rain. Tell the kids to keep an eye out for the lightening and then listen for the thunder. Have a snack, keep smiling and don't show them you are afraid. You are in charge -- now is the time to act like it. Their parents will be forever grateful if you handle this without freaking out and making their kids scared.

Try to find a way to calm them down first, and keep yourselves calm. Put on some music, not too loud though, to try to mask the noise. Close the blinds or whatever so you can't see the lightning, maybe watch something silly on TV or play a silly game. Anything to take their minds off it and keep them from being scared.

Have a sing-along, dance, act goofy, anything that gets you all up and giggling. Make a fort out of couch cushions. Make a tent with a big sheet. Have a pillow fight. Pretend and have a good time. The noise will help drown out the storm noises, and it will help you all relax. Little kids will pick up on your fear. You need to help them feel secure by being secure yourselves.

Unplug the tvs so they don't get hit, stay off the phone! you could try playing a game to get your mind off of the storm. Maybe a board game or I spy. Stay away from the windows, shut the curtains so you can't see the lightning.

Stay calm, stay indoors and keep a radio or TV on so you can get any weather reports. Play games with the children you are babysitting so they don't get scared.

Sing a song in a seemingly safe/comfortable part of the house. Talk about a lot of things to get their mind off of it, or play a game by flash light.

Sing songs or play games away from windows. Try popping popcorn or making milkshakes. Anything that you like to do that will keep your mind and the children's off of the storm.

Pshh! It's just a storm! Try living in Florida or Washington! Suck it up and ignore the storm, it's no big deal. Try going through a hurricane.
