It all goes back to the 10 percent tithe that people were expected to give the Catholic church during the dark and middle (heck, even today) ages. It was a way of the Church staying rich by living off the backs of it's followers. Now today the say the money is for poor people and to help spread God's word throughout the world. I still think it's just a way for the church to live off the backs of it's followers, though. What happened to the old "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's" kind of deal. I guess they like to forget that part.

That's a bunch of appearances really. God or Jesus isn't church, so if a church seems to mismanage their money don't blame God or Jesus for that. Furthermore, all other religions have some form of ritual or habit where they take money or goods from their attendees. In Christian churches this collection is gradually placed at the time after service. Though they will accept gifts and donations at any time but during service.
Buddhist tradition is to give the monks food and goods. Hindus are encouraged to give royally to their brahmin or priest caste. Muslims give alms mostly after ramadan, but this can be done year round.
So just because the Christian churches have organized the collection on a visible moment, doesn't mean it don't happen in other religions. Furthermore the bulk of the money is used for charity and it seems that you can never have enough of that. God and Jesus don't need any of that dough, if needed they'd probably make their own.

Ah, the ignorance you show by your question! Who does most of the work with the poor and the destitute? Christian churches. Surely it's not the Buddhists or the Hindus! Maybe if they DID take up a collection, they could help their own people more -- oh, but then, that would mess up their karma. Guess for them it's better to let people suffer. And evidently you think that would be sooooo much better than taking up money to help out the poor.
(By the way, I do NOT approve of the televangelist beggars who do NOT reflect Christian principles. That is a totally different post.)

LOL that is so funny. All the other religions get thier money also trust me on that one. (in wicca I had to "buy" special candles that only a certain person could make hmmm seems fishy to me now)
As far as the Christian Religions at least they are upfront about it and let you know the reason. It is simple God gave you the money he wants you to know it all belongs to him anyway so why not show him your trust and love. Do you really think he Needs the MONEY? Even if he had no followers what would he need money for? True some people do not use the money correctly but that is hardly Gods fault.

Just for your info, churches aren't run without funds. Some churches get there money in dishonest ways and use the money for the wrong reasons. Catholics expect for you to pay people out of pergitory. This is after the people are dead. Which really will do them no good.
I believe that if you believe in what you support church-wise then you will invest in that ministry. The reason that I give my money is when I stand before God I alone will answer for why I did or didn't support the ministry and I will be rewarded or not rewarded based on that.

The concept of a Higher Power has nothing to do with money. That is why I choose not to follow any religion. I am a Spiritualist who feels that it isn't my right to understand something complex and to invent my own religion. I try to do the next right thing and give praise for the help that I receive. It doesn't cost a penny.

I wanted to be first to answer this question. Nobody, not even Jesus or his dad, can be as bad with money as my wife. So I don't even care.
They can pass around the plate until they are blue in the face, and they can market their holy religion on TV too for all I care.

Every week when you attend church instead of dropping a bill try dropping a card reading "a tree has been planted in your honor" or "a child will eat today thanks to your generosity." i can't think of any church that deserves your funds more than the earth or a starving child. that way no one can be accused of mismanaging money. the money went directly where it should have gone all along.

I agree, people have misunderstood tithing in the Bible, and our churches have become more and more about building a new room onto the church, seeing who has the biggest bank account than about truely helpin others.
I tithe by giving directly to those in need instead of to a church, and God will judge me, not the church.

Jesus puts His money in The First National Bank, Jesus saves, Jesus saves, Jesus saves. ( just a little joke. I hope He has a sense of humor!)
