You can actually go either way. The plastics used these days in bags are recyclable. Paper is too. The bigger question is probably what you could use the bag for all over again. Additionally, the other question you should ask is which costs the store more money...you'll be paying eventually in the cost of the groceries.

The planet would be better off if you used a recyclable cloth bag, but paper is better because it is recyclable. Plastic changes form but is always there. It never decomposes so long after we (human life) are gone there will still be plastic. And cockroaches.

Th best choice for any items you buy is canvas bags--sturdy, reusable, washable, don't break. Bring canvas with you every time (I have been for more than 20 years) and tell the cashier "I have my own bags" and you won't have to listen to that question "Paper or plastic?" again.

Some plastic materials are a bit poisonous because of the chemical content. But paper is good. As it is a sustainable material.

Plastic is cheaper however paper is more enviromentally friendly and decomposes very well and very quickly. They won't make the best choice for you, they'll make the best choice for themselves saving themselves money to put in their own pockets and you'll wind up with plastic.

I prefer plastic because I reuse the bags.. I take my lunches to work in them and when they get beat up enough I take them to recycling.

Paper bags cost them more money. They are always going to go the cheap route if they can get away with it. I say neither, take your own bags.
