I dated my husband when he was reestablishing himself from a year gone awry. What I saw and new about him is that 1) due to unforeseen circumstances (terror attacks) he was out of a job; 2) he had done and was currently doing many things to try to get back on his feet; 3) had degrees and experience to make it happen; 4) had learned from past mistakes; and 5) maintained a positive attitude and perseverance. Those things are important in determining if some one is worthy of a chance.

There are some women that will date a man who is trying to establish themselves. The bad ones will want you to neglect what you need to do to get yourself together and just suck you dry. The good ones will be more understanding of your situation and will be and encouragement to you journey. You just have to be sure that you remain committed to getting your life together and a good woman will come.

I'm a white woman dating a black man. So can I answer this?

When I met my man he was struggling in a dead end job. He ended up quitting that job and living on next to nothing. He is slowly getting his life together and is attending a training school for a job that pays well and that he will enjoy. I am sticking by him and supporting him through it all. I love him and no amount of money or lack of it, will change that.

If you are serious about getting your life together, I see nothing wrong with it. A lot of people will say that they are trying to get established, but what they mean is that they intend on staying home, jobless, while their woman plays mommy and bails them out. Too many of us have been here and have trouble trusting the next brother who comes along, who might actually be trying to pull himself together. But if some real progress is being shown--financial stability increasing, etc.--the right woman will understand.
