What may be needed is modify the penal system to ensure that prisons generate there own resources. All prisoners sentenced to hard labour should be made to work in farms, construction and do many other manual work which requires unskilled workers. The money raised from such work should not be paid to the prisoner but used to run the prison system. Why should anyone expect a free room, free beddings and free meals after committing a crime?

Hard labor. Some of the people are in there for no other reason than they violated their parole or probaton for having a beer or missed one contact with their officer. This is a waste of taxpayers money. My friend had to go spend a couple of weeks in jail and he said the majority of the people in there were in there for minor probation offenses. There are many elderly people that need help right now and states that should be cleaned up. I heard there's a fire in Minnesota right now burnng out of control. These offenders could have gone and cleaned up those trees that fell down. I agree with what was stated earlier and that they should be giving the means to provide for themselves.

Hard labor. Extreme I know but use them a guinea pigs in medical experiments. Let them sell their organs to pay restitution for bodily injury or murder.
