We also have a hound (well, a German Pointer X Walkerhound)... and we also had a cat.... the dog would simply pick up the cat's scent... so, really, all you have to do is find something with the cat's scent on it, have your dog smell it, and keep saying, "Find it"... when your dog comes close to finding the cat, or sees the cat, praise it... and just keep trying... it took a while... but it can be done.

What do you mean by "put it away"? In for the night? Hmmm, my dogs do not need help finding the cat-my problem is getting them NOT to find the cat!!! (dachshunds)

That's going to be hard if the dog hasn't been raised around cats. I used a ball with mine, but soon she learn everyone's name and would go to find them when I told her to.
