I have to go with the consensus here...Ali was the greatest...not only was he one of the all time best strictly as a fighter/boxer, but the personality he brought to the ring changed the whole complexion (no pun intended) of the sport. As a true ring artist, I'd rate Ali just ahead of Sugar Ray Robinson...who truly was one of the best ever...have to give Marciano his props though...only undefeated heavyweight champ in history, maybe because he was smart enough to know when to hang them up.

Everyone else will probably say Ali, and don't get me wrong he was a great boxer, but I have to say that the greatest is Rocky Marciano, he was 49-0, with 43 KO's he retired as the champion, and he had the hardest workout program than any other boxer ever. He even once said when asked what he thought of Ali, " He's a great fighter, but I would Knock him out".

Muhammad Ali. The guy who said Rocky Marciano is living in dreamland. Marciano is the most overrated fighter of all time. He was a young guy who only made six defenses against has beens, never weres and fighters past their prime. Ali fought and dominated in the greatest era of heavyweights ever.

With out a shadow of a doubt, it was Mohammad Ali.
In an interview about one of the fights, George Foreman told a story about how he had hit Ali, with a nearly flush full strength punch, right on the jaw. Later it was told that punch had broken Ali's jaw. Right after the punch, Ali wraps Foreman up and whispers in his ear, "That the best you got George?" Foreman in the interview said that it was the best punch he had ever landed, so "yeah".

sugar ray robinson won the middleweight title when there was only one champion 5 times.he could box circles around his opponents, but when he wanted to he could destroy you with one punch.watch his second fight against gene fullmer if you want to see a truly devastatng knock-out.Henry Armstrong held 3 world championships simultaneously and was screwed out of holding a fourth when there was only 8 weight classes.he also made 19 defences of the welterweight title in only 2 years!either one of these two are easily the best fighters ever.
