Dillinger looks very cute! If he has a good temper and gets along well with your son, I think you should get him.
I volunteered at the SPCA of Central Florida and the SPCA is very good about making sure that all their animals are healthy and socialized. They also keep the animals unitl they find a home (unless they get sick or become agressive).

My hubby and I have three rescue pets (two abused dogs and a cat) and they are the best! It took them a few days to figure out our schedule and I took both dogs to obedience class, which is great for bonding and you'll establish the "pack order" right away.
Rescued pets are the best :)

He looks like a beagle mix. Most are very sweet and good with kids. Be aware though, sometimes they can be high energy so he may need lots of exercise. They may also bark more than you expect-just be prepared! What does your local shelter say? If they are doing THEIR job, they should give an opinion as to whether or not they feel he would be a good fit for your family. Our applicants are screened very carefully. Sometimes dogs don't get adopted to a certain person because we feel there is a better fit out there for him. Also find out what their return policy is. Sometimes an animal just doesn't work out and has to be returned (but later finds a home that is perfect for them!). Usually there is a 7-10 day return policy where you can either get your money back or select another animal. Also be sure your 3 year old can understand the concept of not hurting the dog. When (if) you get the dog, enroll him in obedience class. It will give him confidence and reinforce all he knows and it will help you too. Besides, I found it was great to have 1:1 time with no other interference. You will bond tighter and faster. He looks like a nice dog, good luck!

Thank you so much for asking this question. Please, I want to help you with this, so just hang in there with me. You spent maybe 1-2 hours with the dog; that's fine, but when you get him home, after about maybe not even a week or so, your going to begin to see what he's really made of, meaning any habits he may have. Are you ready for this? Can you ask who has the dog now, if you can take him home for a couple of weeks and if things don't work out take him back? He may seem fine now, but will he constantly bark at night, will he chew when your not home, etc. There are hundreds of questions you need to ask yourself before adopting him. I'm not trying to burst your dream here, but what I'm trying to do is help you before you all get so attached to him that you won't know what to do if he should start to drive you crazy. He walks ok on a leash but pulls ahead a little; this shows dominance on his part, even though he did it a little, he is showing you that he is/has dominant tendencies. As soon as you commanded him no pulling, did he walk beside you or behind you? If he did neither of these, but stayed ahead of you, he was leading you and telling you where to go, not you in command. Also, it does not matter how much land you have for him to run on, ALL dogs no matter the size should be walked for 30 minutes a day or a bit longer. All dogs are made of energy. When dogs ran wild in packs, they walked to get to their food/water/shelter. You are to be his "pack leader" the calm/assertive one, his dominant leader; you will have to provide this walking activity for him. If you do not, he's going to have so much pent up energy that he will not know how to get rid of it, but to maybe chew on your expensive sofa, or your new shoes, etc. You must walk him everyday. Please, see if you can at least take him home for a few days to see how he is knowing that you can take him back. If you are not able to do this, then you may have to think about obedience class for him and you. I'm saying you, so that you both will grow together and learn what eachother is about. You are taking this dog into your home, so it is your responsiblity to learn what he's about. You are his pack leader. You control when he eats, drinks, goes for a walk, etc. Also, you have a 3 year old son, will the dog tolerate what a 3 year old can dish out to a dog? Be sure of this. My son was 3 once, and our Pitt Bull would let him do anything to him all of the time. Why? Because I was the calm/assertive pack leader, and what I said goes. Did I let my son constantly pester our dog, no; but the dog was told by me that this little boy was allowed to tug an ear or tail once in awhile, and you won't do anything about it. Those two were inseperable. Take care, and I wish you the best.

He looks cute and friendly. I would ask why he is in there. Was he a stray or an owner release. He seems perfect. He might be a runaway or a fence climber. Be prepared and spend a lot of time with him and let the shelter know you are interested so they don't take it to the next step with out your knowledge. Good luck!

Get him for sure!! You cant go wrong with a hound like that!! As long as you have a large backyard that is well fenced (which you said you do) I think he will love it!! He looks like a really good dog, and I have had nothing but good experience with hound type dogs!! One word of caution, as he looks like a scent hound you might have problems letting him off leash as they tend to ignore you when they find a scent trail...Other than that the are great dogs to have and usually love swimming and lots of excersise.

He is soooo cute! If there is a chemistry between your family and the dog, chances are he is the one. It sounds like he will be very happy at your home. Good luck and enjoy him. He has been there way to long, and that is very hard on an animal. What are you waiting for?

He looks really good to me.
I really like hunting breeds. They are active and work well for counrty living. Having a fenced acre would give hiim room to run and play and hunt stuff.
If he gets along well with your son and you like him go for it.
Shelter dogs can make the most wonderful pets.
Good luck.

i got my dog out of a poor a very poor situation. and he loves us for what we have done for him. and believe me when i say when the dog is not acting like he have a anger problem then he will be your " friend" forever. but in your case it looks like that he is a very good dog. i would get him, and give him a chance to prove him self. my dog proved him self 2 weeks ago somebody tried to break into my house he scared that person away nothing was stolen because he catched that person on the window. so we just needed to deal with a broken window and not with a empty house. the police told me to get him a big bone, and believe me we got him the biggest bone we found

If you have the time and space. He looks like a hound, which are NOT for me. They bark, run, dig, and destroy. As long as you have the time and are willing to put forth a lot of effort, go for it.
He is apparently an intact male also. I am sure they would get him neutered, but he may have "male" tendencies!!!!!
