For 1.) Never Beat your dog...2.) Their probably doing it because your not taking them out regularly. 3.) You can break them of it by taking them out more often. But get a plastic cover when your not laying or sitting on it to protect it and if they do it WHILE their learning it would be easy to clean up. But to break them of the habit just take them out regularly...but don't beat them with a newspaper...they wouldn't understand what they did wrong if you did that. I know, I have 5 dogs at my house and their spoiled and house trained but when they do something wrong we don't beat them we show them what they've done wrong and pop them 1 time with a hand but not hard. But they don't understand why your beating them if you don't say "NO". They'll learn:)
Good Luck.

It can be because he misses you while you are gone during the day. Dogs tend to do destructive things when left on their own. Depending on the age of the dog, you could try crate training him/her.

A short walk in the woods with a .45 caliber should stop the offending pup from ever doing such a thing in the future.

sounds like dominance, you could put your dog on a leadership program.
read this article to see if it sounds like your problem

Horrible things they are, aren't they. Sleep in the putridness and learn why you shouldn't own one of those vile creatures.
