My dog seems to be coughing alot, but she coughs up white foamy stuff... She also sounds like she is choking.
I called the vet and they said take up her food until monday that was it...
Could she be having a cold or allergies? She is not choking on anything that I could find.
She is 1 yr old and is a Cheapeak Bay Golden Retreiver, this all started last night... The weird thing is I have been sick for two nights as in vomiting only at night, but in the morning I have felt better.
Sorry I don't mean to sound gross.
Can someone please help!

one more thing my friend bought some exer-Hide raw hide chew bones, but not a bone just looks like it.(Chicken basted.) After she got theses with in a day she started choking and I notice anytime she eats or chews anything she chokes or coughs.
Could she be allergic to these?
Please help I don't know what or where to go with this She is doing this often and did it all night long last night July /21-22/06

Yes my dog has been fixed, She is a indoor dog sleeps in my bed most of the time. I have a clean home and she also has her own bed ...A huge dog pillow on the floor next to my bed. Sometime we kick each other out of the bed so she goes there. But last night she stayed there and was hacking all night ... see above

Ok to answer some more of yal'ls questions...
Yes her shots are up to date.
I take very good care of my girl. She is like a kid to me. We are tightly bonded.
I love her very much and if something happened to her it would just crush me. She is the best dog I ever had and I had a lot of great Dogs.
I walk her, but she does not stay out doors and she get fresh water 4 times or more a day. She won't eat, but she wants her chew bone. I will not give it to her now. She has plenty of toys to chew. Thank you all for all your help, the Vet is close and I live in the country they won't help and truthfully I don't like how they run things here. I mean you know when someone cares.

I knew she did not have Parvovirus . I know what that is, from raising dogs. Seen it one time and my dog lived. However I had never seen this before. I will never give her Raw Hide again. She IS eating again. Everything seems to be back to normal.
I didn't know what chemicals are used and had no proof, However that did get my attn: thekla o I will do research on this for sure.

I would remove the chew bones. My dog did choke on one. My vet told me that they were not good for dogs digestive tracks and some dogs don't chew well enough to handle those raw hide bones. The animal might have a scratch in the throat making it cough. Make sure she is drinking water. It might be stuck in her throat. Yes it could be an allergy. If it continues and she can't stop get her to an emergency vet.

Sorry to hear that. If your Vet was not concerned it probably is not life threatening. I know it probably seems worse bcz you are there and you love your dog and don't want to see it suffer. I am the same way.
It could be an allergy, it could be an allergy to the dog bones but probably not that. There may be a small fragment of the treat caught in her throat.
Just keep giving the dog water and Monday seeme like a long time for a dog to go without food unless he wants to x-ray the digestive tract or something. Did they say no food at all or just to take the food up after she eats?
If It were me I would just give the dog a bowl of fresh water and a small amount of plain rice twice a day until you can get to the Vet.
If the Vet was not concerned don't worry yourself to death. Just try to make the doggie as comfortable as possible and give her lots of love.

Sounds like Kennel Cough... it's a fairly common doggy illness, and most dogs are vaccinated against it.

Kennel Cough is most commonly caused by bacteria (which can be found in abundance on rawhide chews), but, can also be caused by viruses. Basically, kennel cough can be compared to a human with the flu.

Make sure you give your dog plenty of water. The vet will probably prescribe an antibiotic for her.

Take good care of your baby... she'll be alright real soon.

Could she have a piece of a rawhide stuck in her throat? She needs to be evaluated by a vet (SOON). Coughing is not normal and could be a sign of many things-congestive heart failure, Lymes Disease, heartworm, or something stuck in her throat. There are many other possibilities too. She needs a CHEST XRAY and possibly blood work if there is nothing stuck in her throat. Have you been anywhere unusual with her lately? Has she eaten anyhing unusual outside lately? Have you changed food? Please find a vet that will see her right away, especially if she is not eatng or drinking in this heat. I don't know where you live but if it is somewhere where outdoor diseases are prevalent, the sooner she is seen, the better. Are her shots up-to-date?

Is it spade??! if not then it could have parvo...but she might be allergic to the bone treats...or when she was eating it she could have a piece stuck in her throat and coughs to get it down. If she's vomiting white foamy stuff...then maybe her stomach is empty. But dogs cough up yellow stuff...and that means that their stomach is empty. But you also don't want to change the diet she's on either because it makes them throw-up and have diarrhea.
Oh...and I wouldn't do what the vet said and not give her, her food because I don't believe it is the food.

Wow,could be many things going on I am not a Vet( but do work for one of the best:) Anyway, has she had a KK(Kennel Cough ) or otherwise called Bordatella vx recently? Is she current on Heart Worm medication? How are her bowel movements? Urine? Does she swallow fluids OK? It may be an allergy as you state or a case of tonsillitis,it a shame they can't tell us where it is bothering them. My Doctor does not advise Rawhide of any kind,he has seen more problems then not with these types of products. Do you have a Vet available for emergencies? I would rec. changing vets or going to an E.R. clinic if she gets worse over wknd.

I sometimes give my dogs rawhide chips (the square ones). I had a problem similar to yours. With my Lab, the rawhide got stuck and he kept "coughing". I didn't know what was going on. He couldn't keep anything down, but he could breath fine and didn't seem to be in any pain. The vet agreed that the rawhide probably got stuck.

But, advanced heartoworm could also have this type of effect. Call your vet.

Oh, I stopped giving them rawhides and I've never had this problem since.

Please call your vet.

sounds like either she has scratched her asophocus or may have a tiny piece stuck in her throat im studying to be a vet and my dog has done the same after eating the flavored raw hides.i suggest a different dog food and no more raw hides. that could be causing the foaming.some raw hides or food doesnt agree with the dogs stomuch.like humans some foods dont agree with our bodys. hope this helps.

she may very well be allergic to the chew bones, so you should certainly stop giving them for now. Could be a virus or some other infection. If she gets worse, call the vet back. Good luck. I know having a sick dog is worrisome.

OK first of all she might have it further down in her throat.
You might not be able to see it if it is not in her mouth !

It might be she swallowed the raw hide too soon my dog chews it makes it soft and then swallows it too and makes a choking or a cough sound...
IF she swallowed it WHOLE without getting it too soft then it may have scratched her throat causing her to have irritation...

I would take her to a vet to see ASAP!

DOGS to cough and it is usually a SIGN of something wrong.
Get here some help soon OK?
