My mother-in-law took it for two years. She had no side effects that I know of. Unfortunately, her breast cancer had already grown into the skin when they found the tumor.
They gave her six months to live, but she ended up living three full years. Her cancer had spread to her liver and a treatment of chemo directly to her liver caused her death.
I know two other women who have been on Tamoxifen for several years(including my mother-in-law's sister)and have not had a recurrence of cancer.
I hope that you or your loved one does well. Best wishes.

My mom and a friend of mine are taking it for 4 years. Neither really have any side effects.
I am having to start taking Tamoxifen in December. Right now I am doing chemo.
Even if it has side effects, I deal with them as Tamoxifen is a good insurance to keep cancer from rearing its ugly head again.

Tamoxifen can knock you round badly however some people don't get those part results. My aspect results are minimal but I would like to be in a position to now not take the pill. Alas my melanoma used to be more developed than yours and it's well worth taking Tamoxifen to offer me the added safety. You nevertheless appear to have had a very small lump and not using a lymph node involvement and in most cases have the sort of just right prognosis that you might get by means of without taking Tamoxifen. That's absolutely as much as you and also you alone. Would you don't forget taking it and seeing how you go on it. Which you could continually discontinue in the event you do not love it. I know a woman who had a so much worse prognosis than mine and he or she has under no circumstances taken it, she simply determined she failed to adore it. She is just about 5 years cancer free on the moment however whether or not she will get it back or now not is yet to be noticeable. If you happen to do get a recurrence will you be able to just be given that without being filled with remorse that you just did not as a minimum are attempting Tamoxifen? In case you believe that you may then by way of all approach do not take it. First-class of success to you, it is no longer an convenient decision.

I take arimadex, which is an alternative to tamoxifen. It has some of the same side effects (bone pain, nausea in the first month, etc.) The idea is to have me stay in menopause, so that I don't produce estrogen any more. Tamoxifen is similar, so there are "side effects" to menopause (hot flashes, etc).
What you have to decide is whether taking the drug is worth the decrease in the risk of the cancer returning. For me, it was a no brainer and so well worth the side effects.

I was on Tamoxifen for seven years after losing both breasts to cancer.
I did not experience any extreme side effects other than some depression and fatigue.
However, I have heard that some people do have serious problems with it.

I have been on Tamoxifen for 2 years. I am 31 and am tired of the menopause crap and mad that I will have to do it again later in life. But, everything in perspective, right? I have had joint pain, weight gain, I am tired all of the time, I have nights sweats to the point of changing clothes, hot flashes, and plain old crabbiness. Yep, life is good....
