Wether it's common or uncommon, it's not HEALTHY.
You might want to find some help, even if you work on improving on your own. Even a tharapist, if nessisary.
One of the things that defines a living being with independent thought is the desire to preserve it's own life.

An awareness of death and what it means to yourself and others is normal, to desire death would send up red flags to any mental health professional. A desire to die is akin to wanting to commit suicide and this is not by any means normal. Statistics don't always tell the real truth, in some developing countries or countries during war could show the desire to die as high while other countries with equal rights, fair wages and a stable government could show it as low. If the question was asked for your sake or that of a friend I would highly recommend seeking help, please, something is wrong.

The desire to die, especially if it is a thought that stays with you for long or is a repeated thought is best handled by being evaluated for depression. Signs of depression include sadness, loss of interest in your favorite activities, feeling empty or hopeless, feeling stressed or overwhelmed, having trouble concentrating, feeling worthless and guilty, feeling irritable or restless, and thoughts of death. You might feel tired, and be sleeping too much or hardly at all, be eating too much or hardly at all, have generalized pains, or dizziness. These are all normal signs of depression.
If you are depressed it doesn't mean you are crazy! Your doctor can give you medicine to help you! So, ask your doctor as soon as you can. Depression sucks, and you don't have to stay depressed!

Normal? Many people contemplate suicide at some point in their lives, but it's not a good sign. It suggests one needs help. Perhaps start with a suicide hot-line, then follow up with counseling.

i don't know any specific details but as long as you don't act on your desire, i don't see a problem. i feel the same way. i don't want to kill myself, i just wish i was dead.

Thinking/fantasizing about suicide is referred to as "suicidal ideation" in the mental health field. I have had suicidal ideation that lead to suicide attempts. Please get educated by visiting the following website below. If you are thinking of harming yourself, get help.

yes we all have certain self destructive instincts.
subtle self destructive instincts include, drinking too much, taking drugs, sex without protection etc but also self preservation instincts. the trick is to balance them both.
