Every time we go there it smells like garbage and poop. Blech! Why can't they just clean it up?

A message to "swingle23" and "kiko":

The French Quarter was virtually untouched by Hurricane Katrina and I have visited the French Quarter many times before it hit and it smelled the same as it does now. I live on Mississippi Gulf Coast (which was, by the way, the worst hit), and it doesn't stink there (well, it doesn't smell, but it does stink.)

I was there working as an adjustor after Katrina hit. If you think it was bad before you should have been there in Oct & Nov '05. It's all swamp land and swamps smell. It's always been like that.

Many of New Orleans' sewage pipe lines are rusted and corroded with age, networked under a tunnel along "canal street"; the smell radiates from the drainage lines within the city.

Worsens with the huge Mardi Gras crowds; lessens throught the rest of the year, but it's omnipresent and not much can be done about it. After years of visits, one becomes accustomed to the smell, which isn't that hard to do.

The whole city smells like that. That kinda happens when you have a whole city to clean up from a hurricane. Why can't you just go help clean it up? Sorry, but too many people complain that it is taking so long to clean it up ect. but aren't willing to help. It took a team of 16 that I went with 2-3 days to gut one house, and that is just the houses. It will take a while before it is "cleaned up."

Ok, so here is another theory (since I admit I wasn't ever there before). Beer, sex, drugs, and partying.

The French Quarter smells bad because drunk tourists pee in the streets and on people's doorsteps.

Trash goes out the front in the Quarter, cause there are no "back" doors.

The tourists are the ones that smell bad and they leave their stench behind when they leave.

It smells bad because it is an aged mixture of urine, blood, alcohol and vomit. Why anyone would enjoy their visit there is beyond me
