How can I make my characters sound more realistic?

I'm planning on writting a story, I just need some writing tips about characters.

Base your characters on people you know or people you see, for me these tend to make for the best characters. No character is more real than a real person.

ask yourself if this is something a person in real life would say. Would it make sense in real life?
