As a car nut myself, if it was between the two, it would be the Mini. Its a better car in every way (according to most motoring magazines etc that I've read on them).

Better handling, better performance, less weight/better MPG, better looks, better resale value.

Not sure I'd choose either.
The MINI cabriolet is compromised by the car being so small there's nowhere to store the roof when folded, so it blocks all rear vision, and seriously reduces the already small rear seat space.
The Beetle is a bit soft for my liking - and if you're considering the MINI (renowned for its handling) I can't see why you would even consider the Beetle, but it is more practical.

At least you're not considering the PT Cruiser cabrio, so you do seem to have taste.

I'm trying to think of a folding hard-top to recommend instead, but the 307/Mégane/Eos/Astra are all more expensive, the 206 suffers from all the usual 206 problems plus the roof is unreliable, the styling of the Micra and Colt are acquired tastes, and I've recently read about reliability problems with the roof on the Tigra.

I would get the mini because of it's more recent styling. The Beetle is starting to be a bit dated in my opinion. Both are good choices though. The mini's resale will probably stay higher, too.
