I have some old SONY speakers that just have the wires. I wan't to connect them to the headphones jack on my TV (similar to a computer speakers port) Is it possible to just split some other kind of headphones cord or something and connect them that way or do I HAVE to get some kind of console?

You would not be able to connect the speakers directly to the headphone output unless the speakers are amplified (this is why computer speakers need batteries or to be plugged into an AC adapter). There simply is not enough power coming from the headphone jack to power speakers. You can connect the headphone output into two RCA jacks on an amplifier, which in turn can power your speakers as one possible solution.

I agree with the last answer. Your headphone jack on the TV probably does not have enough power for your speakers but you can buy a cable that converts the stereo headphone output jack to Right and Left RCA jacks. Then you can plug that into an amplifier with RCA type input jacks and connect your speakers to the amplifier. If you have a Radio Shack or similar electronics store near you, they can help you.
