And also, does this mean we should all be vegetarians too?

Ok, to whomever posted assuming that I don't know the Bible, stop assuming. I do, and I know we have dominance over the animals. After reading and studying the Bible, I have come to the conclusion that it's very unclear and ambiguous and contradictory in many areas. That is my opinion as well, just like you're free to YOUR own opinion.

Oh silly me, looking at these answers, it must be another one of those Christian "convenience" factors. They can always find a scripture to back up what's "convenient" for them.

The commandments were given in how we were to treat one another - you should have read a little prior to just the commandments; but the truth is you probably didn't read for yourself at all did you? You're just quoting something you've heard and thought it would make for a cutesy question to get some kind of answer out of. But, you know it's a sad question, because it shows how little respect you have for God and when people start showing how little respect they have for God, then it spreads, like cockroaches, and before long he has to pass judgment upon the whole bunch and that's where our nation is now - so it's really sad that you've posted such a question that has little meaning and even more - no respect for God.

There are several Hebrew and Greek words translated as "kill" in the Bible. This word in the ten commandments (Exodous 20) means "to murder". This is not a prohibition of all killing, such as self defense, governments using capitol punishment to punish crimes, and the killing of animals.
If you would read Exodous chapters 20 and 21, you would see this command "thou shalt not kill" and other laws where people who have committed certain crimes/sins are to be put to death.
Study these passages. They clearly distinguish between murder and other types of killing.
Let the Bible answer your Bible question.

Ummmm... I had a Christian friend once who was a little off balance, in my opinion, when she thought I should be excommunicated from the congregation for stepping on ants. Then I had to reflect on God's viewpoint of the matter. If God has given man dominion over the animals, and allows us to kill them, it is not a sin for that or bugs either. Apparently men originally were vegetarians, but we have permission to eat meat.
It is noteworthy that the Bible says that the righteous cares for his animals; Proverbs 12:10.

The original intention was not to murder, and the context of this statement was that of the blood-feud.
This would have represented a huge change at that time in history because the world at that time operated on an ethic of revenge or vengeance for acts of aggression. In that world, if you killed one of my family members, our clan would have been morally obligated to come and kill one of your family members. This commandment puts a stop to that way of looking at revenge.
So, go ahead and have a steak and step on those nasty bugs! (Although there are many good things about vegetarianism and even roaches have their place in the web of life.)

The Bible also says (in Genesis) that God gave man dominion over all the other beasts. So I don't think insecticide counts as murder in the Christian religion. Although the Bible also says that adulterers, witches, and many other kinds of sinners should be killed, and that's not really murder either.

If you are so down on the bible and it's meaning and you seem to enjoy putting it down with your stupid questions, why don't you just stay out of the religion and spirituality forums. you are not funny.
That commandment pertains to humans and when noah found land after the flood, God said it was ok to eat meat except for the animals with the split hooves, or animals that chew their cud or the scavengers of the sea .

Hi,,,it means we are equal in the sight of God, respect yourself,as we are created from same essence .
Regarding vegetarian according to the new messenger of God BAHA`U`LLAH ,,,,,,that age agriculture not so much was advanced & every where was not possible ,thats why we were allowed to eat meat ,as humanity is been on its development from childhood to adulthood by the help of God, this is been the evolution of mankind ,,,,,,,,
Now he is saying we are not created to eat meat as our teeth is the proof , not like wild animals thats why humanity learned to cook it ,,,,,,,, but now he says time has come for humanity to learn our food is more vegeterian in its due time as we are maturing in our understanding humanity one day collectively wont eat meat,,,,,already you can see the change that many people are not eating meat,,,,,,,,,

well, again we have someone taking everything literal. Unfortunately, kill in the bible is another word for MURDER! We should not murder each other.
And as far as mosquitoes and cockroaches are concerned----I recommend RAID!
When did you determine that vegetables were not LIVING things? do they not grow as long as they are attached to their plant? Do they not rot if they are left on the vine too long. Sounds like LIVING THINGS TO ME! So please tell me, how far do you plan to take this farce? Just wondering.

No. Before thou shalt not kill, God gave Adam dominion over everything else, every beast too, and said they were to be used for food. Therefore, killing animals, bugs and plants is okay, in Gods terms, we "rule" over them.
The bible is NOT contridictory.

When the bible says that thou shalt not kill it means murder. If you take that command as is, then we would be sinning when we kill bugs or kill in times of war. Think about this...when God, through Moses, led the Children of Israel out of slavery, in their journey, God provided them with quail to eat in the 16h Chapter of Exodus. I say that if God wanted us to be vegetarians or to spare the lives of rodents and bugs then He would have provided vegetables for the children of Israel to eat instead of quail...After all, God is unchanging........
