The reason I ask is because Google Earth gives a journey time of 150 miles as 2 hours and 22 minutes and I thought that might be pushing it. I had heard the limit was 50 mph in some places.

Depending on the state, the maximum speed limit varies. Generally, you will find lower maximums in the eastern states where highways, express ways, toll roads and freeways have more and sharper curves. In the west the speeds are higher in flat straight runs outside metropolitan areas.

It was just reported in the news that Texas was raising the "Posted" speed limit on one stretch of interstate to 80 MPH. This will be the highest posted speed in the US.

Many people will regularly travel 5-10 mph above the posted speed.

the reality of driving, traffic, does not equal mathematics of miles / speed = time.

Rules of thumb for trip planning:

An emergency vehicle with lights and siren operating (fire, police, ambulance) in city streets.---------- 1 mile in 3 minutes.

Driving with gas & bathroom stops only.------- 55 - 60 Miles in 1 hour.

This is an irrelevant question. There is no federal speed limit. States can make their own speed limits or have none whatsoever. There was a 55 mph federal speed limit that would inspire Sammy Hagar to write a song and drive around a Ford GT, but that has been abolished.

There are places in the country currenly without a speed limit.

75 mph in TX. When planning a trip you calculate an average speed of 50 mph.

Depends on the state and city. In Washington our max high speed is on more rural interstates at 70 mph.

If you are asking what the max shown on the speedometer is, again, it varies depending on the vehicle. My pickup has a max of 95, my Kia I believe is around 135.
