Is it wrong to tell my "biracial" niece that the reason why she's not getting a job is b/c she keeps checking

White on her applications??????????? Other family members have told me to stay out of it,but this is just silly to me.

Your family members are correct. But if she's biracial she needs to check other. Its not like they have a biracial slot to check on there.

I am confused about what your are asking. Are you asking if your niece is NOT getting a job is because she calls and wants to know what's going on, or because she put down something on her application that YOU question???

As for the first part, some places of employment become annoyed when an applicant calls and asks what's going on with his/her application. Some don't. I work at a place where the employer gets annoyed. It looks like the applicant is too anxious.

The second part- what she puts on her application is her business, not yours. I don't know if that has anything to do with getting an interview or a job. I know it is against the law to lie on an application and to deny a person employment because of his/her ethnic background. But, again, that's your niece's business, not yours. It is up to her to pursue it if she feels she has been discriminated against because of her ethnic background.

How do you know? Unless you have absolute proof that this is the case then its only assumptions on your part. Moreover, if it is happening and you have proof then she's got a major lawsuit on her hands because employers can't discriminate on the basis of race. Lastly, there are some who think that if you have any black in your blood that you have to identify yourself as black. That is an old way of thinking that really should have been done away with long ago - just like asking someone's race in the first place should be. Point is if she is biracial, she has the right to identify herself according to how she feels.

You honestly believe that the reason why she is not getting a job is because she misrepresents the colour of her skin on an application form? and are there REALLY still places in the World where your ethnicity is a QUESTION on an application form??? You mean that an Employer could reject someone's application because they were a particular colour? without considering their qualifications? My God! Do you live on Earth?

I guess you mean she should take advantage of affirmative action, but being white shouldn't stop a person from getting a job. Calling herself white might confuse them when she shows up at the job interview if she doesn't look white. I'm racially mixed myself although I look more white, but I can tell you it is a confusing issue, especially when your family sends you mixed messages. She needs support to learn to be proud of who she is, and it isn't something to be hidden or ashamed of. After that getting a job is secondary!
