Yes they can, especially parvo or distemper. Make sure your dog is vaccinated before you leave your yard. I never introduce my pups to the world until after vaccinated.

I am told that they can indeed get diseases in walking areas. This happened to a friends dog. The vet said the dog picked it up on the pads of his feet and then while cleaning and licking himself ingested the bacteria. This dog became very ill and died a few weeks later. The vet suggested that they not get another dog for a few months because the dog had walked around the area in their yard and this bacteria was most likely now in their dirt also. I believe it has a name but I can't remember what it is.

Yes! The main scare is developing heart worms from transference of germs. People who travel with their dogs are highly recommended to give their dogs HeartGuard Plus, in addition to their regular vaccinations and check-ups. It's not cheap, but definitely worth the prevention of your pet.

Yes they can
You need to make sure your pet is up to date on all the shots all the time and be careful where you allow them to walk.
Do not allow them to sniff to much around other dogs waste. As that is where the diseases can come from.
