The Old Testament is a history of the Jewish people. As such, it is symbolic and not historical. Some of it fits with history, such as the flight from Egypt (which is also written of in Egyptian histories), the flood (there is much geological evidence of a huge flood during the so called Biblical times). Other parts are simply a fantastical retelling of their history. Remember, the Jewish at that time were not just a religion, they were also a race, and their religion, politics and all aspects of life were tightly interwoven.

No. I believe these stories to be metaphorical in meaning. A worldwide flood almost certainly could not have happened (I'm presently writing a book about that) and if I remember correctly there are no historical records that confirm the story of Moses. In fact, there aren't even any records to confirm that the Hebrews were slaves to the Egyptians.

I believe they are wonderful stories inspired by God to teach us what we need to know about living a "civilized" life. If we read them closely, we can learn from the many dysfunctional families so as not to repeat the mistakes of past generations. God's laws were to control the "crimes" of the day and have evolved through the centuries via the Talmud.

Today we have laws against running red lights because of the traffic problems. Will we still have laws against running red lights 500 years from now when there is a different kind of traffic?

Historically many "stories" can be prov en.
Sadly a lot of people take a biblical story that depicts the culture at that time and they consider it a accepted biblical practice.

Okay, so we cannot use the source documents that give the accounts of the stories you ask that we believe.

That's like saying, "wash your hands, but don't get them wet."
