You're right. Apathy is the reason that the government can get away with doing anything. Or maybe people are apathetic, because they know the government can get away with anything? It's kind of like the question of the chicken and the egg. Which came first?
If I wrote letters to congress, radio stations, and newspapers, do you think that some people would change their mind? I ask this as an honest question, because if I thought that it would make a difference, I probably would do something then. I feel like if my voice isn't attached to some cold, hard cash, then what I say doesn't change a politician's mind.
Leshunl, what you have said is similar reasoning that I have heard other people say; however, I wouldn't turn immigration into a moral issue. I think it is more of a practical issue about how can a country function with so much illegal immigration, and money being paid under the tables. I don't think the Mexicans that come into this country are faring much better in their lives when they are used as slave labor. If you want to talk about moral issues, why don't we try to help Mexico and its population stand on its own two feet?

I got my veterans group to pool some money to buy a full-page ad in a sizeable newspaper, listing every company that hires illegals.
I have sent photos of illegals working on dozens of construction sites to the INS. They don't care.
I do my own yard work because I'd rather do it myself, than allow illegals to do it.
All of my congressscum are Republicans beholden to corporate interests and they don't care about border security at all.

I have written 10 letters to the Editor in the local newspaper and written a number of blogs. I do not think it will do any good because Americans are not that smart and do not realize or /and cannot fathom that we are being taken over by Mexico

Our country was supposedly being "taken over" by immigrants 100 years ago from Ireland and other countries, and we all still speak English. Many of us just have Irish descent. I don't see a reason to get blown out of proportion over this but if it really bothers you, quit blaming the poor looking for a better life just above the border. Just a piece of info...if it wasn't for those willing to pick fruit for less than min. wage, you would be paying over $5 lb. for apples.

I sent a brick to my congressman Phil English, I figure he can't throw away a brick without getting the message as easy as a letter. Also called twice and never received a call back(shocker)
And to Captain Hero, i see quite a few of your members of your country coming here LEGALLY and staying. We welcome them and anyone else who would like to follow our laws and immigrate here. You on the other hand can stay over there, we won't miss you.

I've written Congress and my state Senate and Assembly (I live in California). I've written my Governor. I've sent bricks. I've sent money to two different Minuteman fund drives. I've written Bush. I've sent money to the opponent of Feinstein, because she voted for the Senate Bill, although I voted for her last time.
I will continue to write, and will vote in November.

It seems the U.S. flag colors are redneck, white, and blue. Anyway, the country is a total circus. I'm not a foolish clown, and that's why I don't like the U.S.
