My brother's monster (and nose-bleed expensive) plasma screen is rubbish, the picture is very pixellated, especially for football and other sports. I think if you were to sit around 20 feet away from it it would look OK, but any nearer and it's rubbish. My ancient 14" cathode ray tube telly has a much better picture.

In larger sizes, from a distance they look good. But compared to LCD screens, not nearly as good, but an LCD TV in large sizes, say 40" diagonal is very expensive. But a 50" Plasma looks great from 10-15 feet away. If they were to cost the same most people would buy an LCD over a plasma.

I recently did a bit of research before buying my TV and asked about the difference between Plasma and LCD. I was told that plasma tvs' last about ten years and once they go then that's it - no repair can be done the end! LCD's can be repaired. I actually found that the LCD TV gave a better picture for me and I also don't rate the Plasma picture.

Part of the problem isn't the screen, its the transmitted image.
Your computer monitor is probably on 17" across the diagonals, and probably displays 1024 rows of pixels, making each pixel about 0.25mm.
The PAL signal used in the UK for TV is only 625 rows (and the NTSC system used in the USA is less) - so on a 40" 16:9 plasma screen each pixel will be about 0.8mm.
High-Definition broadcasts are being introduced, and will (on HD compatible screens) improve this drastically.

my hubby is stuck on the panasonic TH42PV500 - he keeps reading mags about it, dreaming about it etc & I just feel the same as everyone else - rubbish - LCDs seem to be much better & I just dont understand why he wants a larger screen at the expense of quality of image!!!!
I wonder when HD kicks in, does anyone know will this plasma look just as good as an LCD?????

If you want a huge tv without any bitties or screen-doors, try an LCoS TV. Although big (But not as heavy as you think) (They are the rear projection type). My friend has one, and it looks lust like a CRT (normal, tube TV), but is much bigger! i think JVC is the only company that makes 'em, but (hopefully) I could be wrong.

They are generally pretty good pictures if you get a top of the range set. As Paula says though they have a sort lifespan and are very much a richman's choice.

This is just a drawback of a digital image. LCD's can be more prone since they were designed for a static image.

I like LCDs better too. They are also cheaper, lighter, and easier to install.
